main front seal

I was changing fluids and filters last weekend and while under the truck I noticed that there was oil leaking out of the plastic oil pan. Since I had the oil drained out of the truck I took the pan off. The gasket was getting a little weathered and hard but I got it cleaned up and put the pan back on. It seams to have worked. I think over time the plastic and metal had contracted and expanded over time and dirt got in between the surfaces. I don't think anything entered the oil but was kinda like a wedge allowing some oil to leak out. After I got that taken care of I looked to the front of the truck and saw oil all over the the front axel and stuff. I could not find where it was leaking and took it to the dealer. I guess the front main crank seal is bad. $600 to fix and I don't think that was to bad of a price. I am going to have them put the third radiator in while there in there also. I had a new one in the garage already so my bill will be about a grand. Hopefully I will get another 150K out of her before more work is needed. Just thought I would let you guys know.

Jason

third radiator is just crazy for the mileage. Someone please make an all aluminum replacement before mine starts leaking. Sorry you were in the shop...that's no fun.

Ditto Savage!
Other than the radiators, which we have all had a heads up on that topic, at 150,000 miles seems like your doing ok. My '05 Duramax seemed like it was in the shop more than on the road and I hadn't even made the 100k note yet...

Got word today that the main seal was not leaking but rather the vacuum pump that is right above the crank. The pump was like $150 instead of $30 for the seal. This means they will keep it another day. I miss my truck, driving around in a dodge caravan..

Sounds like I will be dealing with a similar issue. Got under the truck this evening and noticed oil all over the front end components. This must have happened in the last 2500kms as that is when I was last under the truck to change the oil and all was good. I will be calling the dealer in the morning to make an appt to check it out.

Hopefully this will be covered under the premiumCARE ESP. BTW my truck only has 80,000kms on it.

Hi Great Danes,

Once you have made your appointment with your dealer, please send me your VIN, full name, best daytime phone number, and servicing dealer. I'll check into options.

I was out side today with the truck parked on the street and I noticed some fresh oil stains on the driveway. The only oil stains that are on my concrete driveway are from a 3 1/2 year old truck by the way. So I go out to the road and crawl under my truck to discover that it is still leaking oil out the front after I just spent $1300 to fix it. What the hell!! Now more inconvenience of being with out my truck. I will keep you updated. It must not have been fixed right in the first place or they replaced the wrong part.

Scotty, No it's fresh. I looked under there when I got it back to see how well they cleaned it up. I'm going deer hunting and will worry about later. Thanks

Good luck hunting JReinert!

I seen your post and thought I would show you what my front main seal looked like leaking!

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...oil-leaks.html

It was in the shop for a week during the 4th of July that was a bummer, But so far so good no more leaks. they replaced all the seals up in the front of the motor. mine was hard to see exactly where it was leaking till I used a Bosch inspection camera down in front of the engine.

Good luck! hope they find your leak.

Brian

J, did they replace BOTH the vacuum pump AND the front main, or either or? Sounds like you had a fms leak as well, and they chalked up the oil to the higher up brake pump and gravity.

As you know, and just to keep the info out there, I also had an oil leak at the brake vacuum pump on my truck, 89k on it, so the "brake warranty" had expired, it was an out of pocket repair.

Thanks Bianca,

I dropped the truck off today and it seems that I was correct that the Front Main Seal is the culprit. I was told that the repair would be fully covered by the ESP... if things turn out differently, you will be the first to know.
