every once in awhile, i hear of someone who claims to only change oil every 20,000 miles or more! apparently, they change the filter at 3000-5000 miles , but not the oil. they top off what is missing from the filter and go.
what do you all think of that??

Don't think to much of that at all. I like my truck better than that.

I think it is a questionable process that has originated from the promotion of expensive synthetics..... as in "why change out $5.00PLUS a quart oil every 3,000miles"

Most new cars (mine anyway.. FORD ) are promoting oil change intervals of 5,000 miles

yeh guy's , i can,t imagine the thinking behind this. i like my trucks also. i would be worried about the viscosity changing, and not really knowing what the junk in the bottom of the pan looks like.

I usually change my oil around 4000 miles but sometimes up to 6000 miles. I always change the filter when I do the oil. I do know of some people who do the opposite as you said and drain and change the oil every 4000 miles but only change the filter at every other oil change. I think with the little amount of work and money involved in changing oil, it is best to just change both the oil and filter around every 4000-6000 miles. This works for me.

I think a good guide is how quick the oil gets dirty. If it's black it's probably due.

I could never understand the stupidity of some people, Spend $30,000.00 plus for a vehicle then try any gimic you can think of to save a couple of bucks. If you want it to last, spend the money and do it right. Just my $.02.

Oil is cheap. Why risk it. I put about 5000 miles a year on my 78 camper special and change the oil at least 3 times a year. That may seem like alot but if spending $60 a year keeps my motor working good, I'm on it.

LAST EDITED ON 13-Jul-01 AT 03:36 AM (EST)[p]I change my oil and filter both at 3000. I use Castrol fully
synthetic. Their recomendation for their oil is 10000(???).
I don't care if it's $5.00 a quart or not, I'm still changing it at 3000. I'm not taking the chance.

When you spend as much as I have on the motor why be chintzy with the oil. Castrol 5w50 Syntec year round, change it and filter every 3 to 4,000 miles.

What is dumb is if you change your oil every 10,000 miles is that you would have only changed your oil 10 times in 100,000 miles. That scares me!!! Oil WILL break down at around 2500-3500 miles. So if you run it 10-20k that is just f___in stupid!!!

I too change my automobile oil regularly. But you may be interested to know that the railroad I work for has no set milage or hours regulating oil change for locomotive diesel engines. Oil is changed in locomotive engines only when sample analysis indicates it is necessary. It is not uncommon for oil to last many months in an engine that runs constantly and travels a thousand miles a day. That far exceeds your typical 3,000 interval for an automobile. Autos could do the same also, provided the oil is kept clean and analyzed reqularly for contaminents and adequate chemical fortifiers.

I understand Amsoil offers an oil analysis kit and probably others. It makes all the sense in the world to test the oil that way change when the kit tells you to. Synthetics, to be anywhere near cost effective, have to be sold on that basis...I wouldn't use a synthetic and turn around and change it in 3000 miles. I believe Amsoil recommends changes at 25K miles.
