If you do that you won't have a heater as they are integrated - assuming you have factory A/C. I don't know if you can retrofit a non-A/C box, but I'm pretty sure if you do you will have large holes to plug.
Now to removing it - I'm fairly confident there are some screws on the inside or in the plenum that need to be removed.
I converted one from auto to manual and one from manual to auto in the last year - both with out removing the dash. The pedal assembly bolts through the firewall to the brake master cylinder, and to the dash at the steering column. You do have to take the column out, but not the dash.
Yeah I couldn't drill out the firewall either with out removing it because of the turbo and not being able to get straight on with the hole saw. when I took the pedal assembly out of the partstruck I didn't know how it came out and being in such a hurry didn't think it through afterwards. Oh well it's done now
The under dash portion of the heat only, and heat & A/C systems are totally different.
With factory A/C, the under dash stuff is vacuum controlled. With the heat only setup, it's all cable operated.
Can it be swapped? Yes, but it's not simple. You really need a complete donor to get the entire system from, including the control panel and wiring. May also need to cut/fill holes in the firewall as needed.
The easy way to do this is find a non-A/C truck that is a later model, I know 89's are this way. They configured the later non-A/C trucks like the A/C trucks, so all you have to do is get the later housing and bolt it in your truck. The heater core stays in the same place as it is now.
