Been trying to isolate my noisy serpentine belt. Had the belt off and spun everything, only thing I found that made any noise was the alternator. It had a nice churp like a bearing was on its way out in it. So I replaced that figuring my squeak was going to go away. No such luck. Listening to it again while it was idling, I crawled underneath. Almost seems like the churping noise is coming from the Crank Pulley. Is there a bearing on this pulley that goes bad?
Pulleys dont make noise, worn or dirty belts do.. IF it is on the pulley, it will be due to the belt. Wash the pulleys with dishwashing soap, wash the belt, and try again. If it still does it, check the belt tensioner... then replace the belt.
Thanks for the Tips. Actually today when I went out and started it up it wasn't squeaking. Hoping it stays that way, cause the weather has really turned cold here and washing pulleys and the belt would result in frozen parts.
Old thread, but here goes anyway. So after replacing the belt tensioner, I began looking at idler pulleys as well as the root of the problem. However, they spun fine and there was no wobble there. Finally while the truck was running I happened to look down at the Power steering pump and notice a slight wobble in the pulley there! Bingo right, I was able to reach down and it actually moved when I tried to wiggle it front to back. If only I had seen this sooner. Someone mentioned the bearings go on the ps pump sometimes?
So day after I had the shop do the PS pump I noticed the belt was still pretty noisy. Went for a drive into town and on the way back, it got really loud then I heard a flapping noise. Gauges didnt' spike or anything, but when I pulled into my driveway I popped the hood real quick and shut it down. A couple of the ribs on the belt had rapped around the fan clutch! So I cut and pulled them out, restarted the truck and it looks like the belt isn't anywhere near aligned. I turned it off again and started checking things out a little closer. Looks like the PS pulley isn't pressed on all the way on the shaft and has the whole serp belt out of alignment. Gonna have words with the shop I took it to on monday!
Should have they have to replace the belt and do I dare trust them to finish the job right with the pulley?

I feel like Ive expeerience dejavu reading your post, but beside all the pullys, I actually changed my water pump, cuz when i was a kid my old 4wd used to squeek just like the sound that we hear, in my case it sounded like a turkey cackling after changing the water pump the chirp was still there and i thought i MUST be something to do with the crank NOT

ripstart, my truck didnt make that sound all the time but the more time that went by the worse it got, drove me nuts, write back
When I was tracking down my squealing, turning the tensioner and idler pulleys didn't make any noise, but when I got the idler pulley off, you could feel the bearings, like a bag of marbles. Replacing it solved 98% of the noise.

Suspect the shaft was worn or the bearing was nearly gone. Either way, I didn't feel like changing it myself in -26F temps in my unheated garage. It almost left me on the side of the road. Guess I'll be looking for a new mechanic for my repairs from now on.

I know how you feel, I'm in the process of repairing my exhaust outside in my driveway (Clinton township, mi) well hopefully your suspicions are correct, I went thru the same ordeal and after all that the sound kept coming back until I changed the cam synch. Good luck and keep us posted
Welp, got my truck back today. They didn't own up to there being a problem with the pulley on the PS pump, but they replaced the belt and said it might not have been put on properly. I poked my head under the hood and it looks like they pressed the pulley the rest of the way on cause you can see the shaft is now flush with the pulley like it should be. Before I could stick most of my finger tip inside the pulley before hitting the shaft. Ah well, its fixed now and no more squeak! And they didn't charge me for the second trip to the shop so not a bad deal there.
