Broken coolant temperature sensor

When I bought my truck the temperature sensor didn't work. I pulled it out and it was blown apart so I bought a new one. Temperature sensor still never seemed to work. Got around to checking it again and it looks like this: .

Any ideas?

Looks like something knocked the sheet out of it. Take it with you to the parts house and see if they have one 1/8-1/4in shorter.

To test the dash gauge get a helper to touch the sensor wire to ground for just a few sec.
The gauge if working okay will go up all the way to Hot. Don't leave this grounded very long as it can damage it if left to long but okay for a quick test only..orich

Oh is that what is was, I thought that was a firing cap to a grenade

And was not sure if that was his new one or old one. Thought I'd throw that in if he was wondering how to check it. Maybe PO crosses wired it to pop the sender end open.
Maybe the threaded port is filled with rust to peel it open.

Or another case of the Auto zone curse!!

The picture was the new one that put in. What I didn't realize is that the P.O. used a T fitting to connect another aftermarket gauge. This aftermarket temp sensor was poking the end out of the new ones I was putting in!

Well I pulled the T fitting, and in the process poured about a quart of coolant down my distributer hole . Queue the impromptu oil change in my girlfriends driveway.

After all this I put in another temp sensor and checked the gauge, ground the wire and it pins to hot. Working great. Wired it to the temp sensor and went for a drive....Nothing

Is my engine just not heating up or is there anything else that could be happening. I'm wondering if the sensor I got is the wrong resistance range? I got it from what Napa had in their parts book.

Any ideas?

Do you have a thermostat in it?? If to it's below 180* temp it may not show much on the Ga. You can check the sender by heating the lower part with any heat sores but you must have the thing grounded while heating it with the key switched on.

I've tested them by putting a battery jumper cable clamped to the engine ground and other end clamped around sender. Now heat with match, A joint, A lighter, A heat gun. BUT keep open flame away from the Battery as they will blowup in your face.

Ford calls for a 192-195* thermostat but a lot of carbs boil over after about 15 minutes after shutting off the motor..
I like to use the manual gauges for the oil & temp..
Me, I like to run the 180* temp works for me..orich

Sounds to me to be the incorrect sender.
1969 and earlier Bumps took one sender and 1970 -72 took another. That's if they really did send you one for a Ford.

The Ford part number for your 1972 is DOZZ10884A. Still available from Ford. Call your local dealer.

There are also two types. Gauge and Idiot Light. The idiot light one just closes contacts when it's in the 'Bad' range. Could be you have the wrong type. This is why I go to my local mom and pop vs any of the big box stores populated by disinterested pfk's behind the counter.

Not trying to argue, but Ford Motor Company only lists one choice on the water temp sender. Was originally D0OZ10884A which was replaced by my number above. Both gauge and idiot light. Oil pressure, however, did take different senders.
