6.0 Oil Cooler leak. Advice/Input needed.

I have a 2004 6.0 with 170,000 miles on it. I noticed that I had some oil leaking on my driveway. Upon further inspection I found that the oil was coming from the top and rolling down the bell housing. Put dye inside the oil, ran it for a week and ran a UV light confirmed the oil was leaking out from the Oil Cooler. This sucks.

So what are the best steps to take from here? Is this a difficult job? I've searched but did not find any write ups on it. Is it recommended that I buy Ford parts again? Or are there better aftermarket Oil Cooler rebuild kits that aren't made in China that don't cost an arm and a leg? My truck has the EGR delete. Also, I've heard that an acid flush may be necessary? Can someone break that down for me?

I'm just looking for the best input on the steps I should take to resolve this issue.

All of your help is greatly appreciated.

Consider yourself lucky you got 170K out of that oil cooler. I replaced mine a few years ago at about 90K miles with an OEM oil cooler after I deleted my EGR cooler. I have not had any problems with it. I would recommend, if you don’t so already, to monitor your EOT and ECT to ensure that your cooler is doing its job. They should not be over 15 degrees apart from each other. The job is not hard at all, it just takes time. Good luck.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Likely the o-ring between the oil filter base and top cover.

2nd place would be the top cover engine block.

The oil cooler is internal to the engine.

I am positive that its leaking out of the oil cooler. Do I need to replace the lower portion of the Oil cooler that is located on the top of the engine, or do I replace just the gasket? I'd like to replace all of the gaskets while I have it open. I would just like some type of write up on it but I can't find anything. Also I'd like to do the acid flush while having it open.

Just for semantics, the actual oil cooler is INSIDE the engine under the cover. There is an o-ring between the oil filter base and cover and another o-ring between the cover and engine block.

The oil cooler bolts to the cover with 2 nuts.

If you'll go down to page 25 of this PDF you'll see that it's not possible for the oil cooler to leak externally and you'll see what Josh is telling you. To do the oil cooler will require replacements of all the gaskets anyway and an acid flush is just a waste of money IMHO. Since you're already in it that far then just replace the oil cooler and be done with it. Do the flush before you tear it down so you can clean the whole cooling system and you won't plug the new cooler.

If it's the upper o-rings you can change those without removing the intake, the bottom gasket would need the turbo and intake pulled to change that.

Here are some photos. I don't know if I am seeing things but I swear I see a green tint, which I would suspect engine coolant. Maybe one of you guys with some experience can tell me where exactly you think my leak is coming from...you have no idea how much I appreciate you guys and your input...

Money, I am getting oil leaking down my bell housing onto my driveway, it's definitely oil. But from looking at my truck today I saw a green tint, it could be playing a trick on me. I stuck a paper towel under there to absorb the liquid, it's very dirty, but it looked all black like oil. I didn't see any green. This is driving me crazy. Maybe it's green from the dye that was added...?

Here's a picture of the oil cooler cover removed and disassembled and the seals to put it back in. There are quite a few but some are sealing coolant. Could your oil pressure switch be leaking? (Looks like a pressure sender)

The screw clamp on the EGR is non-factory. Either someone is red necking the factory hose or you have a ghetto EGR delete hose leaking.

Is it safe to spray degreaser in there and spray it down with a water hose?

Yes it has some type of "EGR delete" on there but it looks slightly mickeyrigged. I bought this truck used.

Any of you guys near Tampa, FL that could take a look at this dang thing?
