So... today I took the shop owner for a ride to hear the whine. I saw the pain on his face as the noise began at 40 mph and got louder up to 50 mph... I don't think he wanted this.

I let him drive so he could tell if it was on the drive or coast side of the gears. He said definitely on the coast side. He said he couldn't figure it out though. Said the pattern was absolutely perfect on the drive side and typically if it is perfect on the drive side, the coast side is perfect also.

Anyway, he is going to warranty the gear set and said he wouldn't charge me any labor to do it again with the new set.

Supposed to go in late this week or beginning of next. I'm sure hoping this was a fluke and the next set is quiet!

I will let those who are following this debacle know how it turns out.

Actually this thread probably does get read a lot and the first post wasn't too long either. This thread hits home to a lot of us (especially me) and it is interesting. It's sounds like you have them in a corner but keep us posted. I can't help but wonder what the maker of the gears is thinking; "Did they set it up wrong or did we cut it wrong" ..........maybe they have a way of testing it.

UPDATE

Well.... looks like 'ol James just learned a real hard lesson about local-yokle businesses.

Today was the day to have them replace the old gears with the new ones under warranty.

You know when you are looking at someone that is talking to you and you get the "gut" feeling deep inside that they are flat out lying to you? I had that feeling the minute I went to pick up the Ex. He wouldn't look at me when I was asking about things like: "Is it a NEW seat of gears?".... "did you break them in on the rack?" "did you test drive it and was there any noise?"

He was lying to me the whole time... I do KNOW what he did... he simply tried to re-shim and make the noise go away. He didn't break it in on the rack because the mileage is only 6 miles more than when I dropped it off and the fuel had not dropped a bit. (the first time there were a lot more miles and the fuel was way lower).

Also... the first time I took the Ex home with new gears, the differential was HOT when I got home.... new gears will run hot. This time when I got home, the differential was barely warm to the touch.

I've been had. I got taken. So there you go. What an A-hole he is...

The whine is softer now... but it is still loud enough to make you sick on a long trip.

My next move to get this straightened out is to go to the dealership here and have factory 4.30's put in. Maybe not pull as awesome as 4.56's, but it will be factory and if there is ANY problems, Ford now has 24 months and UNLIMITED mileage warranty on parts and labor. I will feel a whole lot better about that situation.

What will I do about the hillbilly shop? Not sure just yet. Not gonna make any decisions while still angry... I usually regret those.

Thank you all for your support on this matter. I'm sorry I don't have a happy ending... yet. Once the 4.30's are in from dealer, I will come back and tell you all how happy I am!

James

Sucks! 20/20 hindsight, you could have marked the gears with a scratch or something to know if they replaced them or not. What an ordeal. I'm stressed out just reading along.

That sucks and not the outcome we were all hoping for. On a happy note you will be happy with the 4:30 gears as well. I went with factory ford 4:30 and have not had any trouble.

You can always tell. I learned several high dollar lessons the first year I had mine. I think you are making a wise choice on moving on and for now worry about fixing your truck "right". Once the dust has settled you can decide what to do with the "hillbilly". I would recommend you send him a letter stating what you observed when you picked up the truck. And obviously have whomever installs the 4.30's document what they find, even if you decide it's not worth going back for "further action". I know if it were me, I would want to know for sure and see it myself.

You might want to go to the manufacturer of the gears. Tell them about your experience and how this shop is potentially tarnishing their reputation. Tell them about all the time and money you wasted. Tell them about this forum and all the readers who will interpret that their gears may whine and how much business they could lose. Pressure from the vendor might work on the guy at the shop.

Just got in from an early Thanksgiving in the Bay Area. You're caving in! dam, let's take it from the start;

Yes most of them do lie

Break them in on the rack? Is this something they made up?

I doubt if he was able to get free new ones because the distributor or maker knows it is usually the way it was set up that makes them noisy.

They don't run hot unless new pinion bearings were installed and have the proper drag.

The whine is softer? But it's not quiet so it shows you they were moving in the right direction.

Ouch, that dealership line was painful, are you crazy?

Ford warrantee? so what? You just gave away everything to the shop. Did they give you your money back?

Happy with gears you don't want and an empty wallet?

Did you forget about small claims court? I'm a little disappointed right now.

I also agree with wrxin's post. With that ammo you could easily win in court..............you would anyway.

Take it from the top:
I guess so. I know I've watched a couple of different places sit and run the vehicle on the rack up in the air... then turn it off and wait about 30 minutes.... then run it again... rinse and repeat several times... guess they are all nuts huh?

Yep, I'm just a crazy fool I suppose.

Nope, no money back, and unless you want to come down here and beat it out of him yourself, it ain't gonna happen.... he is DEAD sure that the driveshaft vibration CAUSED the pinion bearing to go bad (within 2 miles of driving).... no... he's not sure of it... he's full of it... and he knows it. He thinks he is smarter than the average bear. ( that means you and me)

Again.. yep, I just love that I emptied my wallet and have gears that whine.

Didn't forget about small claims court... if you had read what I wrote about not doing anything right this minute then you would not have asked.... and if you think for one minute that YOU are disappointed...... just wow Brent....

Here's what you didn't get from me in the first post. Maybe it's what you need to hear?

I'm mad as hell. First thought was to go back and choke-slam his skinny little *** into his own gravel driveway.... been there and done that....
You seem to suggest that maybe I'm some kind of "mewling little kitten" that can't take care of himself. You don't have the first clue as to who I am.

I am handling this in a manner that is best for my family. I cannot believe your reply...

And at this point in time you are handling it exactly how a rational person would handle it. Keep calm and plot your next move wisely...

No, but it's not necessary for a rear end.

Yea I am disappointed because you are mentioning giving up and biting the bullet with the dealer

You can't believe my reply? I just can't figure out why you never mention court which is your only way out but you do mention giving up and going to the dealer. I will think you are a mewing little kitten if you give up.
Did I mention I hate garages?
