I got the whole OEM gears have "softer material" and "lapped" and some kind of different "tooth cut" terms and descriptions from just about everywhere.... not sure how you haven't seen those in advertisements as well as manufacturer websites and brochures that come inside the boxes sometimes.
I absolutely know what ring and pinion whine sounds like as well as most bearing type noises. I am pretty sure this is not the driveshaft jump roping underneath my truck and turning the choppy, vibrating hum sound into a whine. When I get my new shaft put in, I will shortly be getting the diff fixed because he will hear the whine for sure. Even if he can live with it and thinks it's normal, I cannot.
I'll keep you posted. Thank you again!
James
That's because I was working on them before they came out with all this hoopla about harder, softer, special tooth cut, lapped in etc. They are all rock hard and it has nothing to do with the setup or whining.
It may be a week or two Tom, but I will do my best. He is pretty cool about letting a customer come back to the work bays and look at what they are doing... If I can be there when/if they crack it open, I will grab a quick shot of the gear pattern for you. The only reason I won't be there when they do it is if they have to keep it all day for some reason.
James
There won't be anything to see, the pattern picture has to be taken with a macro lense right when they use the red lead or Prussian blue on the ring gear tooth face, (if they even check it).
You are forgetting the original statement and the flat denial HERE; . "those are hardened gears for thrashing offroad and for heavy towing, plus the teeth are cut different, they are gonna have more noise than the OEM's that came out of it. There isn't anything we can do".
Now that they changed your mind you are back on the bandwagon.
Ex ..first thing you can do is stop posting what your think my thoughts are. My posts were letting him know a gear ratio change would not cause whine. I touched on his concern how the shop was handling the scenario. I suggested a few common sense cool head approaches he should take and what do you know...he got his ride with the owner that you swore woukdnt happen. He got a verbal commitment to make it right if there is a real problem once the driveshaft was handled. Another thing I told the OP would happen if handled in a professional manner.
Again you state no way would they give him time of day. A trend you seem to like doing is speaking for people.
My concern for the OP as a whole was getting the vehicle fixed. It really concerned me next to nothing the garage claims noisier ring and pinion. I could care less on that but rather helping the OP get the problem resolved. You seem hell bent on scolding the shop on their ring and pinion noise statement more than just helping the OP address the noise.
Just for the record I am not back on the band wagon on anything. That statement makes zero sense.
Secondly why on earth do you suggest to the OP after being at the shop to express his dismay that he go straight to suing them in court. If this was a practice where you worked that you performed your job certain ways until being threatened with a law suit then sadly that speaks for itself.
Around here we handle things in a professional manner and recieve such from the customer.Things are talked about ..thought about..until all parties are satisfied. Its not hard to do and the word law suit..court or there of is something that doesn't come up.
Please know that lawsuits do have their place but they certainly don't after the first or second visit to the garage trying to make something right. Doing such after a visit or two is nothing short of ridiculous.

I never said law suit (small claims court) and you haven't had as many problems I have have with garages obviously. The man at the garage made up a bunch of BS and then said he wasn't going to fix it. Here is his statement again; "those are hardened gears for thrashing offroad and for heavy towing, plus the teeth are cut different, they are gonna have more noise than the OEM's that came out of it. There isn't anything we can do".
I am tired of fighting with garages so now I just take them to small claims, that is what it is for. It is rare that they have a change of heart and I don't know what the reason was, maybe it was all the amo the OP got from FTE. I almost got into 3 fistfights with shop owners in the past but I don't do that anymore. Twice everyone in the shop gathered around ready to jump me and the third time the owners kid tried to block me from getting into my truck. So now as soon as they say they won't help me and I ask them one more time and then I say "OK bye" and the next time they see me is in court.

Seem you have allot of problems, funny how problems follow certain people huh?

Thanks skip, that was pretty rude considering this was over a period of 50 years and you weren't there to witness it, I don't let people walk on me. Many people don't have mechanical experience and they get cheated without even knowing it.
Geez everyone, let this go. Everyone has a different way of dealing with things and this doesn't need to get personal. I don't really care how EXv10 handles his situations, whatever works for him. What I do appreciate is all the advice he provides from his extensive background.
Can we now get back on topic instead of picking on each other?

Thank you.
Just needed some help. I got it from many of you and I appreciate all input on this problem. Argument in jest is great... when it turns toward the dark side, then it isn't so funny. Those who argue on this board would probably find out that they get along great in person...

Oh trust me I know most them are crooks, didn't u see the smilie face!
My point is why do you keep going back and back, then wanna sue? Maybe you should sue yourself for subjecting yourself again and again.

Again, you weren't there to witness it. One time they couldn't fix what I asked them to so they fixed something else and charged me for it and when all the employees saw me arguing through the glass in the owners office they all came in and surrounded me ready to jump. At ANOTHER shop they said they were going to change my ATF so to make sure they changed the converter also I went up to the mechanic while it was on the rack to make sure he would drain the converter. All was fine until they charged me triple of what the original was due to changing the whole trans. When I argued about it all the employees gathered around again ready to jump. (they changed the bill). At ANOTHER shop they fixed my rear main seal and it still leaked but they wanted to get paid anyway so when I went to get my truck they blocked me physically (they eventually fixed the rear main again.) I would have all the work myself but I didn't always have the time or space to do it. Did I mention I hate garages?
So after taking the ride with the shop owner and letting him listen for the gear whine, you will remember he told me to get the driveline vibration taken care of first, then we can ride and again and he can listen for what I am hearing from the new gears.
Just to keep this current, I ordered a custom driveshaft (only this time with 1410 series Spicer Ujoints and the whole shaft is built for a 1 ton truck) from Texas. It is due to arrive at my home on Friday. Once installed, I will get back with the shop owner and let him listen again.
