Getting Ready for Road Trip

So Every November we go to South Dakota for Pheasant and White Tail hunting. Normally we fly, but I have a dog now, so we are taking my Excursion. Its about 1700 miles from here in So.Cal. I have been meaning to do a few upgrades and will be doing some regular maintenance before hitting the road. Other than the lift kit and Tires, it's a Bone Stock 05 6.0l 4x4 with 67k on it. I bought it last year and have only done oil changes so far.

Here's what I plan to do in the next 2 weeks before hitting the road. Let me know if I should look at anything else.

New FICM - Need
Fuel Filters - Need
Tranny Flush and Filters - Need
Oil & Filter Change - Need
Air Filter - Need
Wiper Blades - Need
Blue Spring Upgrade - Want
Coolant Flush - Want
Add a Coolant Filter - Want
EGR Delete - Want

Debating on new tires before I go as well...... Damn this is getting expensive.

Put fuel in the tank and fuel in the driver and enjoy the trip.

These are the humble words of MisterCMK sent on the go...

Most people suggest doing the oil cooler when doing an EGR delete. You'll be digging pretty far down into the motor the oil cooler is only one step away. O.K. it just hit me, your doing an EGR delete in Calif? More info please!!!

Curious why a new FICM and oil cooler? Have you verified they need repair/replacement. That's a large sum of money to just throw at it. I'm still running my original oil cooler at 140,000 miles and it's still well within specs. An 8-10 degree difference at 70mph sustained running.

Also you may have smog **** problems in Cali if you delete the EGR cooler unless you live in a county that doesn't check smog. Then there's the annoying check engine light that comes on after deleting the EGR unless you have a tune that ignores the lack of EGR.

Everything else I say go for it. Do you have a scan gauge, android with torque and Bluetooth obd scanner, or IPhone/pad with dashboss? I'd invest in one of these setups ( Torque on Android here) so you can monitor the oil cooler efficiency, FICM voltage, hpop pressures and just about anything else you can think of. That way you'll know exactly what isn't working properly.

And most of all enjoy your trip and the drive. I love the 05' Ex's most of all.

In Cali, I don't think they do the under hood visual. When I spent some time in northern Cali, they just ran me through and said anything 30 years old and any non commercial diesels just got a tailpipe sniff and a visual on the kitty. Of course that was a few years ago.

why not do the needed maintance items plus the coolant filter and blue spring?
do the other major stuff after the trip. it would suck to miss out on the bird hunting because you broke down half way there.

During my smog check in No. Cal. They opened my hood and hooked me up to the computer. I questioned them saying I thought this was just a visually check and they cited insurance requirements and ask me to STEP OUTSIDE SIR. So I don't know what they did but I wasn't to happy about Pedro hooking wires up to my 61 thousand dollar truck

Just curious....how do you know you need a new FICM?

If it was me, I'd list a scantool as a NEED

I don't get it...according to that thread, you have no way to test it. How do you know it's bad?

So, I'm back from my trip. 4000 miles later. Before I left I did the Blue Spring, Fuel Filters, New FICM from Ed with the Atlas 40 tune.

2 issues. Long crank time when starting (3-5 seconds), and there is a bucking/stumbling under a small load at 1500-1800 RPM. If I'm cruising the hwy and start going up a small incline it will start doing it. If I mash the throttle and kick it down, it pulls great.

Sticky or Bad injectors? I know, I know, I need a scanner to check this stuff. That's next.
Should I be using a fuel/oil additive like Rev-X?
