Downpipe VS Cab-Seam

Downpipe VS Cab-Seam

Getting ready to put the turboed 7.3 into the '85, this weekend I hope.

I've read turbo installation instructions that say to flatten the cab seam on the right side over to make room for the down pipe. Obviously this is something to tackle now that the old engine's out. But where to begin and stop? And is this even an issue for the '83 to '86 generation? I still have my engine bay insulation intact and would like to leave it if I can. I can not see a seem, but it could be hiding under the insulation.

Thanks for any input!

Pretty sure it's the 87 and up body style. But not positive.

What I did?....... Grabbed the biggest bar I could find, and pry'ed against the bellhousing til it cleared enough... You'd be surprised how much the tranny tunnel flexes.....

Should be a seam where the floorpan and the firewall meet up

you do not have to flatten the seam, it just makes things easier if you do.

Thanks guys. I'm all for easier since I have the access right now.
Sounds like I was looking in the wrong area, for some reason the instructions gave me the impression that it was a vertical seam, but the cab to floorpan makes more sense. That'd also mean not much of it would need to be flattened.

Flatten the seam, so you can install a bigger, mandrel bent downpipe.

Got it done, pretty easy, without any drivetrain in her it was just a matter of swinging a small sledge to flatten it out.
So, even if it wasn't necessary now, it'll not be a problem in the future.
