If it only bad batterys they Picked a Heck of a Time to Go Bad LOL
Has thte battery light been coming on latly??
What does the wire you got power from do with Key out Ignition??? I just wonder if it hooked up in a Way to Drain the Batterys But IDK what circuit
Yeah, talk about bad timing. No, the light never came on. I hypothize maybe one batt. was on it's way out and maybe it killed the other.
I don't think the circuit drained the batts. It was only hooked up for a couple minutes tops. To drain them that fast would have caused an over heated wire and possibly a fire.
I had an old 45 CJ2A once. Rewired the whole thing, adding tail lights, blinkers horn. windshield wipers, etc... Loved it. Simple and fun to do. These cars and trucks with all their modern computer controlled doo dads. Give me the old points and spark plugs. I'm dating myself, aren't I?
Is there a trick to loosening the belt tensioner? I can't get the alternator out until The tension on the serpentine belt is released. Any vehicle I've ever dealt with had a 1/2" square hole you could put a breaker bar into to relieve the tension. I'm not finding one on this truck.
Edit: I went out and reread my Hayne's manual. According to them, if there's no square hole, you're supposed to put a socket on the pulley bolt and use that for leverage. I tried that but all it does is tighten the bolt. I'm afraid if I put any more torque on it, it's going to snap.
Thanks, Blade, that worked perfectly. I put a lot of torque on that pulley bolt. Did I hurt anything? Should I back it off? Is there a torque spec. for that bolt?
I was going to say what a stupid idea it was to design a belt tensioner like that, but, I suppose it easier to find something to pry with out in the field than it would be to come up with a 1/2" breaker bar. Anyways, the alternator's out and I'm off to the parts store.
Batteries were toast. Alternator's still good. Scraped together enough cash and bought 2 new ones. Had to do some searching to find them as a lot of stores were out. Seems a lot of Ford diesels must have had the same problem mine did at the exact same time. Go figure. I'll install them tomorrow and post the results.
Just for grins and giggles, put them on a charger over night. If they're low it won't "shock" the new alternator with a huge load trying to charge them AND keep up with glow plugs at the same time.
One more question before I go out to install the new batteries. When I go to start the truck for the first time, is there any special process, like a re-learn procedure, I have to follow?
