There were questions being raised, again, as to whether or not you should be changing the HPOP oil.
I for one have never advocated changing it, because as most of us know, it circulates with the rest of the oil.
However, some people are insistent and believe that the oil in the HPOP some how doesn't circulate and turns to sludge. So I decided to pull the oil out.
I didnt check it for contaminants, or have it tested, I was purely checking to see if it was sludge as some people claim.
I confess---I change it when changing the lube oil. Why not- it does take a little time, but 1 more quart of dirty oil out of the engine when changing multiple gallons does make the clean lube oil stay cleaner a little longer.

This is the sole reason why I do it. I never heard anybody say the oil doesn't circulate. If I had, I would have explained how it can't stay in the reservoir.
Is there a difference in the HPOP reservoir configuration on the 1st generation 7.3 powerstrokes vs ours? I have never done it either but its was always the 95-97 models that I heard this to be an issue.

Over the years, it was talked about every-so-often.
Back before you registered here at FTE, Mr. Volcano Effect (the YouTube Powerstrokehelp dude we make fun of) put out a vid about changing the HPOP oil. It was just one more nail in his self-made coffin.
Once again great video Trey.
When I replaced Honda V-6 short blocks at the dealer I worked at, it would usually take 1.5-2 qts more oil than a normal oil change takes. There is a lot of oil sitting in a motor, clinging to the sides of everything, little pockets, etc.. I would not be surprised if our motors have 2-3 qts left in them. At least. Changing HPOP oil, can't hurt, but nobody has convinced me it really helps, or is worth it.
Basically the only benefit is you get one more quart of dirty used oil out during an oil change. Yes the HPOP oil gets circulated,no it's not stale from not being changed before. But if it makes us all feel warm inside knowing we got an extra quart of dirty oil from our engines,by all means do it. If we don't do it..it's cool too,not removing that one quart during an oil change will not contaminate the new batch enough to worry. LOL..JMHO
I always changed it, just because it is easy and I am pretty picky about stuff anyhow. I don't think it matters that much but it let me know that I did all I could to keep cleaner oil in the whole system.
I change the air in my tires . Summer air does not do well in the winter . I also rotate my lug nuts at the same time . Don't want them to wear out ! lug nuts ain't cheep ! And if not rotated properly they will void your warranty on your muffler bearings , don't want to go through that again ! So , check your blinker fluid and lube your bumper hinges while changing your HPOP oil , and good to go !
There's absolutely nothing wrong with changing the HPOP oil if your goal is to simply get an additional half to full quart of old oil out at the time of an oil change.
This became a big deal when Bill used some creative editing to show how nasty that oil would get if you didn't change it. He even showed on a video how nasty the oil was. The problem was, if you watched several of his videos, you would find him talking about the same truck not having the oil changed in some absolutely ridiculous amount of miles to the point it wouldn't even run the injectors properly anymore.
So to any of you not changing the oil in 70k or 80k, or whatever the number was, then yes, you must change your HPOP oil. For everyone else it's optional.
