Having issues.......95' F150 / 5.8l / E40D / 4x4 / 301K miles
Here is what she doing and what it sounds like. Digging out info before I choice to rebuild or replace or repair.
-Sounds like a dry bearing or a dry gear mesh. Ya know that low toned roar ?
- Has gotten louder over the last 200 miles, started about 300 miles back
-Speedo jumps radically
-Gears shift hard and outta sink (randomly)
-reverse SLAMS into gear
-OD on/off selector is now flashing
All fluids, bearing, connections, u-joints....etc. checked. Externally everythng looks good. (Electronics connections are on the tai of the tranny for this E40D)
Any suggestions as to what the diagnosis may be ? any repairs other than rebuild or replace ?
First part the noise you hear might be internal failure but might be a cracked flex plate/loose torque converter nuts.
Speedo jumping around that is going to create shift problems cause it to go into limp mode.

Not sure what you're saying there?
Have you run the self test to see what the computer knows about it? If not start with that take it from there, make sure the bellhousing bolts are tight no gap between engine block and trans.
Make sure the TC nuts are tight, inspect flex plate.
Get the codes out with the test procedure, then post back. In 95 the vss / vehicle speed sensor is in the rear pumpkin, are you sure the roar isnt from that instead of the transmission? The vss is what goes out and causes the jumping speedo.

This unit has 2 wiring harness connections (that I can locate). 1 is on the shift link and the other is on the tail of the transmission on the RH side behind the heat shield.
The roar is constant, and loud. The speedo only works occasionally and for short bursts.
got the punkin cover off and the sensor out.....now gotta see what its 'suppose' to look like . I'll go from here.
Thought you missed the L but wasn't sure.
Any metal shaving on the sensor?
Get the weight off the wheels trans in neutral rotate the shaft watch the ring gear as it spins, should spin straight and true and not get closer/further from center line.
Take a suitable bar check everything for play, see if you can move the carrier off center, look for any play in the bearings missing/chipped teeth etc.
danr1......
I appreciate the bits of intel brother. Speedo sensor was indeed shot. I'm sure that replacing this baby tomorrow will cure alot of my ailments .
As for the constant roar ? I gotta claim "dork" on this one. While I was Pulling the punkin' cover and checking all my gears, I reached around to free turn the drive shaft and check for visible play.......WELL.....The muffler that I so creatively wired back up a couple months ago had slid over and laying firmly on the drive shaft. DUHHHHHH !!!!!
While the truck is in motion, Yup.....harmonic roar was there. No wonder it stopped when the truck wasn't moving. One of those "here's your sign" moments.
But thanks for the intel on the sensor , That I did need assistance on.

lol hey we all have our greater moments in sports!
All's well that ends well then, a cheap easy fix and be all set. Heck really couldn't ask for better end result of a thread starts out "thinking my trans might be toast".
Between the hard shifts from the speed sensor, the jumpy speedo and the coincidental roar of the muffler baratone.......Had me dang well convinced tranny was going. After 300K miles, I wouldn't be surprised.....but NOPE, ol' gal keeps a tickin.
