I just recently put new front and rear seals in my 1992 F150 That has an E40D trans. and 4.9 engine. The truck ran great for about 15 miles until I pushed the overdrive button on the gear shift. Now the transmission will not shift in to second gear. When taking off from a stop it does fine until about 10-15 mph. Then it acts like it is trying to shift into 4 gear. Is there anyway to reset, or check out what may becausing this problem. I have checked all of my fuses. I did take the fuse that runs the speedo out, and the transmission will shift thru all the gears fine. Is the transmisson controlled be the computer, brain box or relays? I also developed some gauge problems when this happed. The instrument cluster went flat.
Did you entire instrument cluster die? It sounds like a wiring issue if that's the case. If it's just the speedo, then you either need a new speedo or to clean your VSS off, which sits on top of the rear axle.
The tranny needs input from the speedo in order to know when to shift. It's not shifting because it doesn't think you're moving.
the E4OD takes input from the speedo for shifting. the fuse u removed cuts power to the speedo and odometer, interior lights and thus the tranny shifts in limp mode.
I can manually shift gears and the transmisson shifts fine, and the speedo works. Can the vss still be the problem? The transmission is shifting in limp mode without any problems. What other sensors, computers or relays could it be?
