I may have a couple questions but this is the first i've run in to
I have a 72' 360 that needed a quick rebuild, i have never torn a motor apart before so bare with me, the issue im having is that im not sure if the rocker arms are head specific, i see markings on each of the arms or supports but cant remember which came off which head.
Are they head specific and if so can anyone help me find out how to determine which rocker set goes on which head?
I have looked in the haynes manual i have and can not find anything saying they are or aren't specific, any help is greatly appreciated!
No the rocker's are not head specific. What is specific are the main caps and rod caps. But don't worry if you get them mixed up, The machine shop can put them where they go. When putting the motor back together it's important then to make sure they are in the right location.
Dude are you dip sheeet crazy, you have never torn an engine apart and now are doing so.
Put the gun down and step away. You are going to get hurt. Have you pulled the engine?
John
No I'm not, we all have to start somewhere right? Yes ive pulled the motor, and yes I've torn it down to replace every single gasket and I'm going back with everything i took out, my only question was if the arms or (supports) were specific to the cylinder head.
And i apologized, i've never torn down a motor this big or complex, pretty much been stuck to dirtbikes and street bike motors, but i love my 68'
The rocker arms and shaft are not head specific, but......
If your Rockers are adjustable you wont be in to bad of shape. If you replaced the Valves, valve gaskets, Springs, push rods and lifters, then your in even better shape.
If your Rockers are the non-adjustable version then your in for a lot of work. The push rods are valve specific. In a non-adjustable valve train, proper valve lash is set by installing correct length push rods.
One more thing, if you didn't have a machine shop install hardened valve seats for the exhaust valves, and new valve guides, then everything else you did is just a waste of time,
