06, 195 1/2 K Miles. Saturday night I set a P0405 Cel. I removed the EGR Valve Sunday and cleaned it, it didn't look that bad and I didn't think that was the answer and I was right. I drove to work this morning and watched the gauge and this is what was going on. On cold start the EGR Gauge showed "0". It stayed that way until ECT reached 160* then it registered low 30's, it would spike for a second to 85 and go right back down to 30's then drop to 9 for a sec. and back up to 30's. Most of the drive it would show low 30's high 40's but did not set the Cel. On the way home it did the same thing, "0" until 160* ect. ect. The only Difference was it set both the P0404 and P0405. I know there's more to this system than the Valve and was wondering if there are other sensors that should be checked or cleaned before buying a new EGR Valve ? A quick look at pig tail wires showed no chaffing
Thank You Tim
P0404 EGR Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control Circuit Range/Performance EGR sensor or valve, EGR position circuit
P0405 EGR Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit Low Open circuit, short to ground, EGR position sensor
You probably have these already, but I thought I'd throw them out here.

I cleared the codes and they stayed off for 20 days, but they both came back yesterday. So I pulled and cleaned the MAP and the IAT2 sensors today. The MAP didn't look to bad but the IAT2 sensor was pretty gunked up. After reinstalling and starting no CEL Light came on but I haven't driven it yet. I'll keep an eye on it and post back the results.
Thank You for your help........ Tim
It's been one month since I cleaned the MAP and IAT2 sensors. I drive the truck to work
daily, 80 miles round trip. The codes have not returned yet, so far so good.
My first rebuilt replacement Egr valve worked for a month then it would code 405 after heavy acceleration. I too cleaned various and sundry things before giving up and just leaving it unplugged for a while.
My second brand new replacement valve works perfectly. No more codes, no smoke, boost to 28 psi and correct fan operation.

Thanks for the input Pete. Just like the rebuilt MAF I bought for my Wife's car that didn't work. It convinced me I didn't know what I was doing, so took the car to a shop to find out the MAF wasn't any good!!!! Huuuuuhhhh????? Sounds like it's New or Nothing!!!
