Well, I already bought the popcorn 5 posts ago, and want my money's worth, so I'm just going to go ahead and say it...
The most regarded air filter systems for this application are:
- Ford AIS (Air Induction System). The filter media is made by Donaldson, and is called PowerCore.
- Napa 6637 air filter. Napa's element is probably made by Wix, but Donaldson has an equivalent screened, cylindrical, pleated, fan fold paper element as well. This system is popularly coined the "Tymar", named after the company that first popularized this big bare unprotected paper element in the engine compartment back in 2001 or so.
Note that the above two air filter elements are not oiled cotton gauze. They are also the same types of filters that OEMs use in over the road diesel engines. Something to think about.
Beyond this, there is a sea of aftermarket choices that do not use an OEM type element
- AFE
- Volant
- S&B
- K&N
- Banks
It is in the debate over these later choices that extends the movie long enough to get the free refill on the popcorn.
my feeling on k&n is you are buying a name. nothing more. and i will never run them on anything i own after seeing a few engines "dusted" due to the lack of filtration of the k&n filter.
about the most popular filter is the 6637, and you can buy one from riffraff diesel: http://www.riffraffdiesel.com/6637-intake/
for $29, or the filter kit for $87 which comes with the filter, cover, and install tubing.
