Intake sensor assistance.

Hi. I recently purchased a 2002 f230 7.3 and im pretty new to the diesel world. The previous owner had put a K&N intake on it. When i was having a mechanic look over the truck to see what i should update, he noticed that there was a harness that wasn't connected to anything. He told me that there should be a sensor in the intake, but it was defiantly missing. He also said that this sensor is very important for having the truck run properly. Can someone please tell me the name of this sensor and if buying a used one is ok or just go new.

Thank you in advance!

Intake Air Temperature sensor, plugs into the air box, if running an aftermarket filter, it should still be connected, but generally zip tied to in the area. They are pretty low failure, so you should be fine with a used one I would think.

i'm gonna say, since the trucks an 02, its forr the filter minder. There just seems not enough "lead' for it to be an ait sensor.

There wasn't a picture when I first replied, but you might be correct, as with the '02's there is also a filter minder.

OP there should be 2 wire looms in the area, both about the same size, if you could find the other with the IAT sensor still plugged in, that would help verify it. Mine is ziptied to the lines on the master cylinder for reference.

Thank you for that. Last question. Is there a right or wrong one to buy? Summit racing has these replacements, but i'm not sure if there is a right one.

This one is the correct IAT sensor style.

I think Timmyboy is right and that is for the air filter minder. Check this thread out: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...from-02-a.html

Update. Finnaly found a second to look for the 2nd harness.......

FOUND IT!

It was tucked behind the relays next to the master cylinder.......... Now to get it in the intake. Is there any specific way to test the sensor to make sure its still working?

So the mystery wire is for the Filter Minder, which would only work on some models of intakes.

Looks to be that way. Is the Filter Minder necessary with a aftermarket intake?

No it is not, and the intake air temp sensor can just be left somewhere near the filter. The PCM needs a reading of what the intake air temp is and makes adjustments to the tables based on that reading, so as long as it is somewhere relatively near your filter, it should be fine. Now if you want to really open a can of worms, ask if people think you should keep that K&N or not.

I believe I have seen some drill a hole in the end of the filter and insert the filter minder there. I don't think it is necessary though. Just keep an eye on it for trash and change it regularly.

Im pretty sure is not even a real K&N intake. There is noting special about it at all. Just a metal pipe. I put the K&N filter on it. lol. I know K&N normally account for factory sensors. Thats what makes me think its not a real K&N because there is no place for the IAT sensor.

I have no problems with worms. Is there an issue with the aftermarket intakes or just K&N?
