Nate - In the upper right of someone's post, right below the # of posts for that person, you'll see a little green square, or string of squares. For instance, both Chris and Bill currently have 11 each, while I currently have 7. Those indicate the "reputation" of the person, and they are a result of people clicking the heart-shaped icon in the upper right of someone's post to say "well done" effectively. These accumulate over time and are usually because someone went the extra mile and helped someone out big time.
But, the system is set up to encourage us to "rep" a wide range of people, and remembers those we've rep'd and prevents us from doing the same for them again w/o "spreading the love" to others.
