Charging Problem Solved quick write-up
my trucks a 99 250 5.4 crew one alternator
I was having a charge problem but battery is new and topped off alternator tested good at advanced auto what then?
well after plenty of research and after the battery, terminal connectors, starter solenoid and Alt turned out ok. looked at fuse links in the alternator harness which on this truck wasn't so big about 3 feet or complicated to take off just unplug everything and remove it.
So first visually trace wires from Alt to battery area where they connect to starter solenoid. with battery removed remove wires and from solenoid and inspect the fuse links to look for burn marks and cuts then feel them do they feel like they have wire in them or do they feel like hollow tube all soft and rubbery which may be a burnt out wire.
well in my wire harness there were 3 fuse links at the connection point. Two 12ga and one 18ga that connected to them. the 18ga had completely corroded and was nothing but green powder. to check i had to cut and peel the shrink tube it and it was the connection point that was gone so at least it was not caused by some short somewhere.
went to the store picked up 18ga and some same size ring connectors that were self soldering shrink tube. made the sect and installed the new fuse link tested for continuity and good to go. installed back in the truck and all was back to normal. here are some picks
