i have tried searching but can't seem to find a guide for installing a double din radio in a SD. im trying to figure out if there is a video or picture guide on how to install a double din in a SD Dash. can someone help me in this? want to see if i could do myself or if i should take to a installer.
i seen videos on removal and thats not what i'm worried about. its moding the dash removing the lips on the plastic so a true double din will slide in. but ty for the help, just should been more specific what i needed i think.
so i would need to buy a dremal tool and sanding disk lik blog says below. but is it worth the investment in a dremal?
Step 8: Enlarge the dash cover opening. The DNX7140 is nearly identical in depth to the stock stereo, so that’s not a problem. The height is bit more though, so a slight modification is required on the dash cover. The opening inside the dash is plenty tall enough for a double-DIN stereo.
dash opening before modification
The plastic lips at the top and bottom of the dash cover are all that prevent the new stereo from sliding in. The lips on the sides can be left alone. I used a Dremel with a sanding drum and spent about 5 minutes grinding the lips flush with the rest of the dash cover opening.
If you do get a cheap dremal just be careful, they can get away from you if you're not used to operating them. You might be better off just using a file, not as quick but more controllable.
I just put in a Kenwood DDX470 in my 250. I had to cut off the piece of plastic that the two screws were in as well as the top and bottom lips off the dash. Now it all fits in fine but due to that custom cutting, the trim that comes with the radio doesn't fit and isn't to clean looking. But everything fits in just fine besides for that. I borrowed a Dremel from work and that made it much easier to cut that piece of plastic out. I might have take it somewhere to have it cleaned up so it looks more OEM and put in a sub while they're at it, might as well get everything done at once. I'll post a picture of the radio when I get off work tomorrow.
A jig saw works well. That's what I used when I put me double din in.
I used wooden shims to hold the sides of the radio in. It does not move at all.
I think I have a pic in gallery of the radio.
I am curious what wire is the one from the factory , that is the delay power to the head unit.
Just to clarify, when you turn the key off , the windows and radio will play until you open the door...
I would like to keep that feature, or is it a function of the deck itself ?

That is a feature of the truck itself and well also work when hooking up an after market stereo when it's hooked up to the factory stereo wiring. You can achieve this using harness adaptors that plug right in to the factory harness and wire up to your stereo.
Installed a double din in my 2008 Superduty,,everything from the JVC R800 cd player to the installation kit and even the antenna adaptor came from Amazon,,,,the install kit had easy to follow instructions,,replaced the factory speakers with Sony Xplod 5X7s,,,,sounds mucho better
