I spent the night trying to install a fuel pump. 73 F250 with a 390 auto. Was able to remove the pump rather easily, re-installing the back bolt however is another story. Anyone have any ideas or experience on installing the back bolt. Seems as though the oil filter or oil pressure (sensor)? may be in the way. Not wanting to remove the filter as I just changed the oil less than 100 miles ago. But it I must then I will. Thanks in advance.
Thanks Mike, I will give that a try after work. Cannot believe I could not get that back bolt started. Thanks again.
In order for me to get my fuel pump bolts off and back on I had to remove the A/C bracket to get easy access from the top side. I tried putting the bolts back from underneath and i couldn't get them in without mis-aligning the gasket.
It still required a good bit of extension, a 9/16 socket and some choice words to get it done.
Try turning the engine until the pump lobe on the end of the crankshaft is up and relieves the pressure on the pump shaft. That will give you a little room to turn the pump down in the front and start the rear bolt first. I use a universal 9/16 scoket and extenion.
You will lose a little oil removing the filter, but you can just reinstall it. A little mess to make things easier is worth it to me. Better than crossing a thread in the block.
Got it installed. I took off the oil pressure (fitting?). Unthreaded it and immediately installed the pump. Very easy once I removed the fitting. Thanks for all of the advice. Oh yeah. I had a swivel ready and did not have to use it.
Drove it to work today. Runs great. My problems originated 2 weeks ago. I drove to lunch like usual and it dies on the way back to work. While waiting on tow truck it starts up and runs. I change fuel filter, runs great for 1 week. Then dies on the way to work. This is when I pulled rear tank to check (clean as a whistle), and then changed fuel pump. Everything runs great right now. Just wondering. Can a mechanical fuel pump run intermittently like it appears to have done? Just a little gun shy after 2 trips on a tow truck. Thanks

I just replaced my fuel pump today. Since I had the AC delete, removing the power steering bracket allowed for easy access to the fuel pump from the top. I even had room to start the bolts by hand! It was so easy, I had to share.
