My 2001 F350 7.3 turbo diesel starts up fine but idles rough and runs rough for about a mile. then the check engine light goes off and engine smooths out and runs great the rest of the day. Next day, same thing. Ideas?
Sounds like a bad glow plug, but the check engine light raises an eyebrow. That could be a failing Under Valve Cover Harness... which would make poor connection to glow plug(s) and an injector(s).
Its on the driver side in the valley, pull the plug. Oil in the connector indicates it is going bad and could be the problem.
Ultimately you need to get that check engine light code.
ICP sensor going bad will set a P1280.
There is a poor mans way of checking the ICP sensor. When it is running rough and the check engine light is on, (with the truck on) unplug the sensor. If the engine stumbles, stutters or in anyway changes idle then the sensor was working. Unplugging it causes the PCM to default to a preset value. If nothing changes then the PCM had already lost communication with the sensor and had already defaulted.
Would this be a Cali truck with the glow plug control module by any chance? If so, a bad glow plug would trip the check engine light. definitely pointing to UVCH coming loose on one side, mine did this very same thing that led me to this site 4 years ago.
