Transfer tank

I am thinking about a 45-50 gal in bed transfer tank. 9" in front of the tool box.
If I plumb it up as a gravity feed into the stock tank, how do I prevent the stock tank from overflowing? I need some guidance before I purchase. Thanks

I have an RDS 45 gallon aux tank in the bed in front of my tool box.

Here is the tank:

Amazon.com: RDS Vertical Diesel Fuel Transfer Tank - 45-Gallon, Model# 71083: Home Improvement Amazon.com: RDS Vertical Diesel Fuel Transfer Tank - 45-Gallon, Model# 71083: Home Improvement

It holds more like 40 gallons in reality. No real complaints, other than I wish I bought a larger L shaped version.

I have a transfer pump mounted on the passenger side of the tank but I also have the aux tank plumbed into my stock tank.

I was not a fan of gravity feed for a number of reasons. I chose to run an inline fuel pump I could turn on and off from the cab.

I ran a 3/8" fuel line from the aux tank to an inline filter, to a 12v fuel shut off solenoid, to my 12v inline pump, and then plumbed it into my fuel filler neck.

Works great.

I discovered my tank still gravity fed through my inline pump so I had to add the 12v fuel shut off solenoid.

Got the inline fuel pump from Napa.

Wired the switch (illuminated toggle) in the cab and put in a secondary flashing LED light in a visible area to alert me of fuel being transferred. That way I wont forget the pump is running.

Will the fuel cap prevent leaks in case of overfill or will I be leaking diesel?

Why do you dislike gravity feed?

gravity feed will not work, because you have no way to control how much fuel goes in to the tank. this will cause the fuel to flow until the fuel level is lower than the highest opening, which is the fill neck.
and the cap will not stop fuel from flowing out of the neck.

I have been using this kit for 5 years on my tank tool box combination no problems in 60k miles. Tractor supply also stocks this kit.

I put a 40 gallon ( 37 gallon ) tank in this summer from tractor supply Filler neck kit from northerntool. I welded a bung to the bottom of the tank.. Using the northern kit(check valve and rubber boots) No issues at all.. I just got back from a 2500 mile trip.. Not a drip.. Totally gravity feed, fuel cap and rubber grommets in the top of the tank didn't leak. The northern kit came with a ball valve.. I love the install.

The rds looks like an interesting kit. I am seeing a lot of mixed reviews and I am wondering if the people with problems didn't install the kits properly.

I avoided the gravity feed kit because it is illegal in some areas and partly due to the reviews. Seems to work fine on pavement but it can overfill on bumpy roads.

Its so easy to put in a pump and shut off solenoid I see no reason why anyone would go with gravity feed. I would rather not risk dumping 40 gallons of diesel on the road, which would be the least of your worries if you got caught. Imagine the environmental cleanup fees.

Mine is gravity fed, with a RDS kit. BUT i installed a solenoid between the tank and the RDS kit. Best way to go IMO. I can control when fuel flows if I forget switch on my dash is on it still doesn't overflow.

I just plumbed mine up to the truck. Took 2 12v switches one to feed the fuel and one for the return. 😎

Wait what...

You plumbed in a 12v fuel return? As in sending fuel from your main tank back to your transfer tank? Why?
