Help- lost boost while towing.

Climbing with indicated 25-30 lbs boost (normal) and blew odd the after cooler blue hose. Re-installed on side of road. Truck runs perfectly but boost will not go above 5-7 lbs and obviously low power.

Ideas? Still loaded and 200 miles from destination.

-Thanks in advance.

-Mike

Sounds like you have a leak in the boot. You can remove and inspect it, but pretty sure its torn. If you have some duct tape, that might help you get to the next town. There is a possibility that its not seated all the way also.

^^^^^Yes, check the boot.

Some have found they folded under the boot on the underside of the mounting. Check all 4 boots while you are there.

Usually a torn boot is pretty obvious because of the noise it makes, but that is the most likely cause of the loss of boost.

If it is not torn, you might check the map sensor hose to see if it is loose or damaged.

Ok. Boot is in good shape- I checked. But I did re-install with the engine running because it had been running at WTO with 24-26k behind it on a pretty good climb- ECT was at 220 and I didn't want to shut it down hot.

After I restarted later, boost level and everything was back to normal. Pulls like a train again.

How hard should I torque the boot clamp? It says "do not over torque" and I have been paranoid about reefing it down, but obviously I did not have it tight enough after I upgraded boots (years ago) or it would not have blown.

Is there something else I should do when I re-install those boots that I have not done? Everything is dry and clean.

Thanks in advance.

Torque is low, 12 lb ft, I think, hopefully someone will chime in with facts.

Yeah, I have the spec- and that is what I went to. But it blew so I must have done something wrong. -Mike

Hair Spray!!! Blade, you keep hairspray in your truck?!?!

Thanks for the advice. What about that tacky stuff for holding gaskets in place during assembly- would that be ok to use?

When you torque those clamps, do you end up compressing that spring all the way down?

I really can't figure why this one blew today- the truck has spent a lot of time loaded and climbing WOT at 3,000 RPMS since I upgraded the boots years ago- and the boot did not blow until today.

LOL well I haven't had to use it but I know Lots of folks who Have

Silicone would Hold forever but would Kill the Boot if it had to come apart down the road so Hairspray works Greaty for this

I haven't used the Tackey stuff for gaskets but it sounds Fine

Folks just use the Hairspray cause it will hold But it can Also be Taken Apart fairly easy Just work a Screwdriver around the Boots if you need to take it apart down the road

I bet my spring is Close to Compressed all the Way Im Shure I overtorqed it Some Im probably double torq spec

Maybe worked loose over time or Boost psi was little higher IDK

Oil gets in there and Makes it all Slick so the Boot may slide off

Maybe a Few things that Lead to the Boot coming off just keep an Eye on Boost PSI for a Few Days Now especialy at WOT or when engine is Loaded and lots of Boost

You don't want to see over 28psi Boost

Also check MAP BARO EBP @ KOEO they should be the Same

Keep an eye on it you will be Fine

Thanks. I'll check these tomorrow AM and track down some hairspray. What will it tell me if those numbers are not all the same? I do not think that it is over-boosting. I understand that the factory gauge is not very accurate, but I have never observed it hit an indicated 30. It looks like 28 or 29 is the top end on the factory gauge.

I use a little interior trim adhesive on the inside of my CAC hoses. My truck will hit 32psi when I lay into it.
