Boost is Back!

Finally had a local mech look for my oil leak. He found loose boots and slipped boots. Put them back in place and tighten all up. I think it fixed my leaks but I know it has improved my boost. I did not know how much power I have been missing until I got it back. Now I have a question, I have been running my wastegate unplugged. It seems to be opening up easier now than when plugged up. Any reason for that? I have tried it both ways and both opens but it does open more when unplugged.

Did you unplug the hose to the canistor or the electrical plug to the boost control solinoid?

I have had a chance to run wastegate plugged and unplugged. Can't seem to tell much differance. If anything it seems to open more with it unplugged. Also, I don't see as much black smoke when I get on it as I did before the repairs. What do you think?

The black smoke you were seeing before was probably from rich combustion caused by lack of enough air due to the leaks. Sounds pretty normal you'd see less smoke with full boost.

Are u sure your getting less boost with the wastegate disconnected;verified by boost gauge?
U should get less black smoke since u fixed your leak because your combustion
is cleaner with more air making it into the cylinders.

I am ashamed to say I don't have my gauges in yet. I am going by the sound of the wastegate opening up. I seem to hear it more when unplugged. Thanks for you input.

its dang near impossible to hear the wastegate open. over the sound of the engine as it opens, its almost inaudible. the wastegate is integral to the exhaust system, and it is a closed system. it doesnt make a hissing or wooshing noise. if you can hear it as i watch it open up, ill shake your hand.

Ok, maybe I hear something else. It is a whoosing sound at the end of a hard acceleration and let off.

That sound is air escaping back past the turbo when you let off the throttle. You really hear the engine "breathing" when you open the intake with 6637 filter. Sounds are always there, just don't hear them with the stock intake.

The wastegate, when installed and operating normally, starts to open at 5 pounds of boost, and remains open until you go below 5 PSI. When you disconnect and plug the red pressure hose, the wastegate remains closed until it is off-seated by boost pressure. On an unmodified wastegate this generally happens around 22-24 PSI. You create and sustain more boost with the wastegate disabled.
