Smile Question

Hi Folks, I'm new here on FTE, I read alot of the threads so I decided to join and ask advice from all, on my 1958 Ford F250 292 Y Block 4.8L. I Purchased this truck Back in March and I have done a Ton Of Work to it and I Love my Truck. Recently I noticed oil coming out of my oil breather and I've been asking around to see what it is and I'm being told I need to have a PCV VALVE installed. Question #1 Does anyone have advice on how to install that on a 292 Y Block? or is it something else ?? I looked all around the engine and I don't see one nor do I see a Blow tube, appears it has been removed. Another Question #2 My Truck has a DANA 60 differential on it and I just replaced the pinion seal with my mechanic because it was leaking, I drove it the other day for about 50 miles and I parked it at home and when I checked it I saw that it was still leaking. Does anyone have any advice on anything else I need to change to get it to stop leaking? I appreciate anyones advice that could help me steered in the right direction. Thanks!!!

I Purchased this truck Back in March and I have done a Ton Of Work to it and I Love my Truck.

Recently I noticed oil coming out of my oil breather and I've been asking around to see what it is and I'm being told I need to have a PCV VALVE installed.
PCV was introduced in 1961, no vehicle prior came with it.

I looked all around the engine and I don't see a Blow (road draft) tube, appears it has been removed.
1957/59: Located on left (drivers) side of engine block.

My Truck has a DANA 60 differential on it and I just replaced the pinion seal with my mechanic because it was leaking, I drove it the other day for about 50 miles and I parked it at home and when I checked it I saw that it was still leaking.
Welcome to FTE

Most likely, the pinion seal was not installed properly.

Left (upper - pic above): Exploded view of road draft tube and its internal parts. 6A631 is B2TZ-6A631-A .. Crankcase Ventilation Screen. It probably hasn't been changed in years.

When it gets clogged up, pressure builds up inside the engine, oil begins blowing out.

Notice that the pic below the tube is the 1961/63 292 PCV system. 6A666 is the PCV valve.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Right (lower pic): Road draft tube (6758) visible on side of block.

6737 is the canister that the partial flow paper cartridge oil filter fits into. Filter called a 'sock' because it's wrapped in white gauze.

Some trucks came with it, some came with the full flow "Spin-On" oil filter. A kit was available at Ford parts counters to install the Spin-On filter in place of the messy to change sock filter.

Kit was also available from NAPA and it still is today. The current Ford part number for the filter is: Motorcraft FL-1A

Left (lower) pic: Cartridge 'Sock' Filter & Spin-On Oil Filter.

Could we see some pictures? Here is how.

But I got ta say becoming a supporter is the fastest and easiest way to post pics right from
your whatever pad/cell thing or home computer.
Few of us look in the users Gallery or album as you can see by your recent visitors.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

Here's a tutorial Bob put together: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/67...-pictures.html Bob's link is not working. Can someone in the know tell me why?

How to upload pictures to the FTE Forums. - YouTube. Thanks Sam Rusty_Old_F250. Best we can find is that this video was done by Gundown64

Smile 292 Y Block

Hi, Thanks for the response and those picture's helped alot, Well where the road draft tube is on the engine picture, mine is gone and has a plate with two screws so I guess last owner got rid of it. I see now in the picture how to do the PCV Valve it makes sense, the engine has to breath, Ok so Fresh air goes into the breather and follows through blow by into the manifold and I guess it burns off thier??? Will PCV relieve Pressure and take care of the oil coming out of the breather? My oil filter is normal spin on I guess last owner put an adaptor to do that. As Far as posting picture's I need some time to figure it out when I get home from work. So the Pinion seal is possibly installed wrong? I guess i'm gonna take it back to the mechanic and ask, he said that maybe it also needs a new YOKE could that be TRUE? Thanks again for the information.

Look at the PCV pic again. 6A665 "Crankcase Ventilation Emission Reduction Adapter" fits into a hole at the rear of the engine block.

The 6A666 smog valve threads into 374963-S brass fitting that threads into a hole in the intake manifold in front of the carb. Then there's all the misc tubing between these parts.

Your 1958 292 engine (ditto if 1957 or 1959/60) will not have any of these features because PCV was introduced in 1961.

Smile Pinion Seal / YOKE

Hi, Yesterday I asked about my 1958 Ford F250's Dana 60 Differential, that my mechanic replaced the rear pinion seal and numberdummy got me thinking if it was installed properly. So I went back to my mechanic and we took it apart to look and Yes it was installed right, my mechanic then advised that if we put a new YOKE it would take care of the leaking problem, but i'm not so sure that would help, can anyone tell me if that is GOOD INFORMATION?? Also how do I check to see if my YOKE is 10 29 30 etc SPLINE??? I'm new here so i'm trying to learn the site which is great and full of alot of great Peaple and advice, HOW DO I PUT A PICTURE OF MY TRUCK NEXT TO MY PROFILE NAME like I see all you guys do when you ask a question. I see your picture of your truck or car next to your names??? Thanks

That picture is a little deceiving, they are only typical and don't show changes. There is no hole on the rear of the block for the PVC adapter, it actually goes on the valley cover. It is probably the same valley cover as used on cars that had a rear road draft tube on the valley cover. 61 and later blocks have no opening in the front left part of the block for a road draft tube.

It is possible that a grove has been worn into the yoke and preventing the seal from properly sealing. Did your mechanic show you that problem on the yoke?

There is a repair for the yoke called a speedy sleeve or jiffy sleeve. It is a thin band that fits over the seal surface on the yoke and gives a new sealing surface. It is way cheaper than a new yoke and any parts store will have it. A real mechanic should know about this repair.

OP has typed a new thread on the leaky pinion seal problemo. I gave him this info.

The thing is, while you and I did, his mechanic...didn't.
