Throttling question.

05, 350, 4X4 w/EGR delete and SCT tuner set on street. When I punch it from a stop, it takes a few seconds to pick up, then it shifts hard. If I don't punch it, it shifts smooth. Is that normal?

The trans is computer controlled and tries to respond appropriately based on several different inputs- throttle position/load being just a couple of them.

I'm not a tuner guy so can't help much on that part of the question. I have read many times the "shift on the fly" tuners are hard on the trans though. Everyone seems to be running custom tunes to avoid trans problems.

When I first got my 6.0 I had a slight learning curve. Jumped out in traffic a couple of times and squeezed the throttle hard and CRAP! it seemed to boost REAL slow. I kinda learned what to expect and really don't notice it much anymore. If you need to take off quick, rolling into the throttle as the boost comes up or boosting up against the brakes for a second before take off works pretty well.

Thanks Rusty, that's the info I've been looking for.. I have been driving a diesel just about a year now, it has always done that, even before the tuner. I just didn't know if it was normal. Glad to hear that it is. I originally thought it was the EGR valve but it continued after the delete so I was worried that I had done something bad. Happy to have found this forum and people who have already had experiences that are willing to share! Thanks again!!

Who did you get your tunes from?
I got mine from Matt. When I first ran the SRL I had some shifting oddness.
When I talked to them I was told to do an adjustment to the shifting pressures. I later
found out that If I did the relearning that the problem went away.
The reason I had to go back to stock and start all over was time for the sniff test here.
So when I put the tune back after the return to stock for the test I did the relearn steps.

One thing you have to understand is that when you are pushing it hard and it goes to shift
it will not be a soft shift. But it should not feel like someone dropping a clutch at high RPMs.

Give you tuner writer a call or send an email and ask about what you are experiencing and
if it's right for the tune your running.

You could also return to stock and do the relearn steps.

Great stuff! Thanks for the input. I will try the relearn and find out about the fine tuning.

In the transmission section there is some options for shift tuning. Take to you tune
person and see what they think. Make any adjustment in small steps and only
change one thing at a time or you won't know what did what or if the one change undid
the other change.

Another option is to have your FICM tuned It makes a huge difference in throttle response.

At the top of the forum is a link to the TECH FOLDER
I think you will find a lot of things there that may give
you more insight as to how this engine works and it's needs.

FICM = fuel injector control module. It's what controls how much fuel your injectors get. It has to be tuned with a "special" tuner and it's not like PCM tuning.

Ok, so after reading all these posts, I went back to my truck and plugged the tuner in. Went through the settings (I've been afraid to tinker with any settings... Afraid I would screw something up) and found the second place to change my revolutions per mile. Changed it to match the 610 that's tire chart and speedo setting called for. Now she shifts smooth as a baby's bottom!!

Nice.

And remember with the SCT unit if you think you goofed
just return to stock and all should be good.
