on one of the side of gear box (or trans. case) there should be an I.D. tag that tells you what it is. Your truck could have had a T 18 originally, but then later swapped by a p o at a later date. At which case the only way to know is to either pull the access panel inside the cab and look at the top of the case, or crawl underneath and look for the I.D. tag. I believe the new process tag is on the passenger side. Not sure on the borg warner.

ID tags usually long gone by now, and won't tell you much...if they are present.
To ID the NP from the Warner is a piece of cake, you don't have to go thru this rigmarole, or exit the cab. All you gotta do is look at the shift lever retainer caps. See post 6.
