My 79 F350 with factory 4 speed has a clicking noise coming out of the transmission when driving in compound and reverse. Is it time for a complete rebuild or is it possable its something simple?
Is the transmition a T18, T19, Or the NP 435 and how do I tell the difference?

Get a large long zip tie and install it on your pal's driveshaft. Install it so the uncut tang will slap the body once the shaft starts rotating... better yet if you're riding inside with him or her.
In terms of IDing trannies, there should be a tag mounted on its side. On an NP435, it faces the passenger side and held on by rivets. Decode the model number by searching online.....Heres' a wepage to help you out:
