OK folks. I hit my black plastic bedrail caps with the heat gun almost two years ago. That held up the VA sun for about 1 year and they are starting to fade to white again. I sprayed (with Bondo Bumper Black) the wheel arch moldings last year and I'm very happy to say that this product worked quite well on those moldings.
So here's the question: Who has removed their bedrail caps?
I would like to take them off to paint them as it would be easier to remove them than it would be to mask and paper the truck to prevent overspray. So, will I break them? Are they clipped in from the underside? Any advice here would be great.
Mine popped off really easily ...I started one clip near the back, then slipped a flat roofers pry bar under the caps and worked my way toward the front...Worked like a champ...Oh, mine is an '04 that was really faded, I replaced 'em with new ones and a tail cap for less than $200 shipped, best idea I've had in a while...No more mess, no more painting, no more aggravation...

where'd you get yours from? And if you have a 5.5 foot box what is the part number? Thanks. Sorry to hijack thread McDavis, hopefully it'll only get off target for one post.
Bigunit, no worries. I actually looked at new replacements too. Tousley Ford (now White Bear) has all 3 pieces for $18x.xx plus shipping. Roughly $70 per side, and $50 for the tailgate cap. I was thinking of getting a brand new set, painting them, and installing them, but I'd rather apply that $200 towards the new BakFlip that I have my eye on.
I'm just afraid of snapping the clips off and being SOL. I don't mind masking, it's just a PITA.
Talk to Kelly Poston, he knows what we're looking for and handles the customer service just like it's supposed to be... I'm very pleased and will deal with him again...
is not Good....The relief I got from fixing the problem is enormous....I did paint my cowls a few weeks back, and I really like the way they worked out...But the rail caps get enough abuse that I really did'nt want to keep worrying about them...I am going to PTM the older ones with spray bombs when I get to it , just so that I'll know I have 'em... I took my time removing the old rails with the pry bar, every clip stayed on... Still was a really quick positive fix....
Now to the step rails, I'm not buying any new ones just yet...Wish I could figure out how to get the plastic right on those...

Good to hear about the rails coming off. I have a 2foot 2" wide roofers pry bar that will likely work. I may wrap that in a rag to keep paint damage down.
As for the step bars...that was an easy fix for me. Rip 'em off and sell them on Craigslist at the same time ordering 6-Step Wheel-to-wheel nerf bars from N-Fab. One of the best additions to my truck to date.
good info thanks, mine are really bad on my 04, as well as the plastic on my wheel wells are beginning to fade bad as well. Also bad rust on the rear bumper of my FX4 paint chipped off of each corner, looks like crap.
