Milky Oil

Hi,

My son just had a lot of work done on his 2004 6.0 including new heads, studs, an injector and EGR upgrades and on a test run today a warning light came on. He checked his water and it was 1/2 full and the brand new oil was milky. He changed the oil yesterday after about 500 miles after the work on the engine, took it out today to put more miles on the truck as he was told to put at least 1000 before pulling a trailer. He was out about 50 miles when the warning light came on.

He is thinking a cracked block. Anything else less drastic that could be causing coolant in oil?

Thanks for any info.

+1 on that hate to blame other people but in this case it seems warranted

It is a shop that a friend owns and my son helped with the repairs. The original problem was the heads were cracked. They ended up replacing a couple of injectors, upgraded the EGR cooler and installed new upgraded heads, head gaskets and studs and I am sure there were other parts replaced.

As I wrote before, the truck had 500 mi on it after the repairs that were done two weeks ago, oil was changed this morning and it looked good, then he drove it about 50 miles until the water temp shot up.

So where would you guys recommend a good source for a short block? My son lives in SoCal.

Thanks for the help>

If your lucky it's the oil cooler. I wouldn't install a new egr cooler without doing the oil cooler at the same time.

OK, the oil cooler was also upgraded. So it looks like he will be looking for a good used engine from a wrecked truck and just transfer all the upgrades he did.

Bullit390, thanks for the PM. He is not sure he wants a block that needs to be repaired, but that depends on how much the lady wants for it. I encouraged him to at least call her and see what the price would be. This way, once it is rebuilt, he will have a 0 time engine, not one that has been in a wreck and who knows how it was treated before.

Thanks for all the help!

The shop today told my son to bring the truck back....they think it may be a front cover. Unfortunately, it is over 230 miles away from him (near where I live), but no matter, I will get a flat bed and and run over and pick it up.

Will let everyone know what the shop finds out.

Thanks everyone for trying to help.

Up Date

Well, our mechanic found the problem. It was a blown freeze plug in one of the brand new ported and polished heads from a reputable shop. Unfortunately, they won't cover it (not even replace/repair the head), so our shop ordered brand new factory heads that will be in by Wednesday. He also has contacted his lawyer and plans on suing the parts supplier. My son never drove the truck over 65 mph with no load and no hard acceleration after the new heads were installed. Had about 500 miles on the truck when I bought him a full set of gauges which were installed and he was out test driving the truck with them when the freeze plug blew.

Also, our mechanic first suspected the front cover, but it was good, but will replace it anyway.

Interesting, another cause for the memory banks.
Hope the parts supplier will "man up" and do the right thing. if it goes to far w lawyer might as well shoot fo tow costs and every little thing possible including atty fees.

most importantly glad its solved and will be fixed!

What freeze plug in the cylinder head would blow causing coolant to mix with oil?
