Fords as late as 1964 had generators.

So, the trouble shooting for a generator is the same as an alternator? That whole diode thing should have been the end of it. Don't pull wires off your alternator trying to troubleshoot.

You don't need to check residual or flashwas fields in these units.

Buying a truck with a generator doesn't solve mysteries about poor practice.
