voltage regulator question

hi, i have a 1980 ford f150 302, right know it has a voltage regulator in it, well i'am going to explain what happened and maybe you can help me out, well just last week i started the truck up and decided i wanted to check my charging system so while the truck was running i took out the battery, but when i put the battery back in the voltage light came on and it's always on everytime i start the truck( it stays on to) so i was wondering if i blew the voltage regulator, the alternator and battery are still good. but if it's the voltage regulator do i have to have it or will the battery still charge without the regulator?

please help..

No, the alternator WILL NOT charge the battery without a voltage regulator. Never, never, disconnect a battery while the engine is running. The battery acts as a filter for voltage spikes that the alternator puts out. In addition to that, very large voltage spikes can be generated by the huge Di/Dt that is created when the battery cable is removed from the battery. Best case, you have blown the voltage regulator, and diodes in the alternator. Worse case, you have fried the PCM with the voltage spikes.....
