Rearview mirror going out...

There is a small crescent shape of clear mirror on the top middle of my mirror. I think the dimming "juice" has been compromised. Am I SOL or is there a way to fix it? What vehicles are interchangeable and is there a mirror that's better that I could swap in?

Mine did this earlier this year. I went to the Goldmine and got one out of an 05 Expedition. You have to modify the plug ever so slightly by breaking a tab off. Works better than my old one did before it crapped out. There is a thread in here somewhere about this. I also used a little clear silicon on the mount to keep it from vibrating. There is a very slight difference in the mount size between the two vehicles.

There are tons of options, new or used. I was contemplating putting one in that had a view screen in it, but ended up buying one from Tylus. (I don't remember what it came out of.) This one doesn't have the manual override switch, but I haven't missed it. I suspect the most you'd have to do with anything you get would be to move some terminals in the plug.

I got one from a 2001 Explorer. Paid $20 for it.

That model mirror is the one that has 7 wire plug. The 3 on the inside is for the power, ground, and reverse. The outer two not sure. I know that dodge used the same mirror though.

Did some digging. Mine doesn't have the prongs for 6 and 7. Guess the truck I got it out of didn't have auto lamps.

pretty much any Ford from 1996 to current will "snap" onto the windshield wedge

if you want to plug n' play, most 00-04 Fords are what you are after. they almost all use the exact same electrical plug

The excursion is the only one that had the 3 prong harness in it. Or at least mine did. The opening for my plug in my factory mirror was only big enough for the plug in the pics above. I had to cut the lock tab off mine to make it work with the explorer mirror.

I had to cut the lock tab of the one I salvaged from the Expedition as well.

It's gone, you'll have to replace it. I had to replace the one in my '02. Found an '04 Ex in the yard and pulled it from that.

The one in the wreck I bought was bad too (and worse- half the mirror), not sure if it got like that from the accident or not.
