ok so my research hasn't really turned up anything useful so i figured i'd ask you guys. my 1988 f250 with the 7.3 idi hasnt recently lost its injection pump. the motor had 250,000 miles on it so its kind of understandable. now i just need to make sure on some things. first will any idi injection pump work on my truck or are there year ranges with speific pumps? secondly i need to find a new pump, or find a place willing to rebuild the one i have for cheaper than the price of a new pump. im located outside louisville ky if that helps at all. thanks very much for all the help ill undoubtedly receive.
All the IDI pumps will fit, but try to stay with one from a 7.3 instead of a 6.9L. Just for clarification, there is no such thing as a new pump any more, only rebuilt pumps. Cheap rebuilds are just that... often just cleaned up and minimally serviced. The way I look at it you have 3 options:
1) buy a cheap used pump at a junkyard but don't expect much longevity or performance out of it... refer to your junkyard's return/ exchange policy... take your chances.
2) buy a $350 "cheap-o" rebuild that ~may last a while... sometimes you get lucky... but they are only as good as their warrantee... take your chances.
3) spend the cash on a quality rebuilt pump that will deliver in terms of performance and longevity but will cost a couple hundred more than the cheap-o rebuilds. I recommend R&D IDI Performance for a good pump at a good price.

I just replaced my IP myself about a month ago. My truck is the 88 7.3 as well. Some people may debate that all pumps are interchangable, thus risking it at a junkyard is fine. I personally want to keep numbers matching as much as I can. You are going to need a DB2-4812 pump if you have the automatic C6 and a "cheapo" one can be found at Penscola Diesel for no more than 420 after shipping and handling, no core charge.
I bought mine from Pensacola Diesel, just be sure to specify on their website what kind of transmission you have and what year.
On the pensacola website they specify "They dont deal with Stanadyne junk" yet I got a stanadyne pump in the mail.
Stanadyne ~is the company that makes (or rather made) our pumps. Here is a history of the DB2... Stanadyne DB2 Injection Pump - Diesel Engine - Diesel Power Magazine
Perhaps Pensacola was punctuating that they rebuild their own pumps and are not just a distributor of Stanadyne remans, with whatever reputation they have made for themselves.
If you are ordering a pump, by all means, match up the numbers. If you are junkyarding, get the cleanest best condition pump you can find and ignore the numbers. Any decent condition 7.3 pump should work fine, you may have to switch some of the peripheral parts over though.
