I offered to paint a buddy's 53 some time ago and it has really put a cramp in my schedule for my truck. After some not-so-gentle coaxing from the bride I painted the cab today, hopefully the color sand/buff will go quickly and I can get back on track. This cab has had the drip rails smoothed...they really look good.
I love watching the pro's do there thing, and this is why. It looks like it's already been color sanded and buffed to me. Beautiful work Charlie, and a generous friend.
Looks like all the firewall holes have been filled as well. Is this truck going to have all the wiring hidden? and a forward tilting hood or front clip?
This truck belongs to a fellow club member, I am painting it for him because the shop that he took it to years ago could not get around to the final paint work for another year or so. The bodywork seems to be good on the cab, especially in the drip rail area. The original drip rails were rusted so the owner decided to "mold them in". I have seen shaved rails in the past but never smoothed rails...I definitely like the looks of these. The color is House of Kolor Euro Red and is much brighter in person. I am not sure how the owner is going to run the wiring but I do know that he has the rest of the body parts ready to bring to me for paint and that includes the hood and fenders. He had the rear hinge mounting holes filled so I am assuming that he will be going with a front tilt. He has the chassis completed so I really wanted to get the cab body back to him so he can get to work on reassembly of the most critical part. I will be shooting the interior with my homemade Lizardskin (that's why the inside of the cab is still black and not red) after the buffing is complete.
Here is a closeup pic of the drip rail, once again not my work but I really like the look...
Thanks Ed...maybe it will be done in time for the PUL All-Chapter Picnic in March. A few of the San Diego guys are meeting up with the OC group on Friday at the Escondido cruise...hope to see you there if you can make it.
BTW - this truck and a few others are fairly new to the club so I am working with them to get ready for the Western Nationals in 2014...the SD group has been lagging here lately so I intend to get the push on early this year.
Drip Rails look awesome. I have read some artticles about removing drip rails and it seams like it would be a ton of work welding the open gap back together. Do you think they just filled the stock drip rails with filler or welded a piece over the drip rail and then finishd it with filler to "smooth" it out? Im thinking you might have been able to see how it was done before you shot it.
The work was done by a very reputable shop so I would have to say that the rails were properly formed from steel and welded. I can see in the inside of the cab where there have been patch panels installed in other places and the welded seams look very smooth and even. The owner said that he paid the shop a lot of money to get the truck "to primer", most of my efforts have been to block sand all the panels and paint.
It's been hot and humid for far too many days now...unusual for San Diego, makes me appreciate what you guys in the rest of the country go through each summer. I was raised in Ohio so I know heat and humidity but knowing it and feeling it are two different things. Time to hit the garage...
Wow, love the color and looks like a really great paint job. Are you a professional painter, did you do this at home? I'm toying with the idea of painting my truck since I'm not looking for a show truck and it will be somewhat of a daily driver. Love the drip rails also, I've never seen it done this way. I really like it molded better than shaved.
Great job, can't wait to see it buffed and getting back together.
