Charlie, so are you saying the ration of microspheres to paint is 1 to 1? I also have a question about bedliner on the floor. If you take it to an upholster to install carpet, do they drill holes thru the cab floor and mess up the bedliner? How do they install carpet without breaking the seal on the bedliner under the cab floor?
The best ratio of paint/spheres is one that maximizes the spheres and minimizes the paint. There should only be as much paint as necessary to hold the spheres together and to bond to the body panel. What you will find is that a good mix is one that looks like cake batter...thick but able to be sprayed with a Shutz gun.
Any upholsterer that put a screw in the floor of my truck to install carpet would be shot on sight! There are too many other ways to affix carpet to a floor to be using such caveman techniques as screws. If the carpet is to be removable (access to battery compartment for instance), then industrial Velcro works great. If the carpet is permanent then glue it in place. If you do "break the seal" with a bolt or screw then it would be a simple matter to dab a bit of seam sealer over the the offending protrusion to re-establish the seal.
Looking great Charlie. And thanks for the details. As you know im redoing my 56 and its been fun. Now with the front end off shooting some paint is getting closer and your info will help. So many choices out there.
Looking good Ed, I noticed the seam fill on the A pillar and the dash...nice touches.
Charlie and I are headed up your way on Sunday to go to the Long beach swap. Met up with Chris, Bill, and a few other OC guys last time for the swap and breakfast. Maybe we'll see you there.
Has anyone been following this thread and trying the home brew lizzard skin with good results? I have my microspheres and just have to choose a paint to mix it with. Its only for interior application in my case. I would like to hear from Charlie on how that project has held up.
Thanks Charlie. I have my microballoons. Im just waiting to get some epxoy down. Then I am going to pick up some good quality exterior latex paint and mix it 1:1 for my interior. Reason for the post is to see if any other members have had the same experience and positive outcome that you did.
I use Rust Seal (same type of product as Zero Rust or POR15) and yes I do apply my homebrew lizardskin over it. No reason not to, the latex paint used in the lizardskin has no solvents that will interact with the rust encapsulator. Here are a couple of pics of my 40 Ford coupe inside roof, the red oxide color paint is the Rust Seal and the gray is the homebrew lizard skin...
Charlie, are you using the stock hinges or the front flip hinges? Was your hood that straight before you started working on it? I have four hoods from excellent to pretty banged up. Three trucks so one extra hood for good measure.
