Hey yall I have a 1995 f250 with the 7.3 with a E4od transmission, the body and engine have about 206,000miles and the rebuilt tranny has about 5,000 miles on it. Lately it hasn't been shifting right when its going to 2nd to 3rd, it wont shift tell you either let it get up to about 2,200 rpm's or you put it neutral and back into drive and sometimes you just have to wait for it to change while its at high rpm's.
So I was driving back from a bbq yesterday and I was going around a turn and I gave it some gas and it felt like put it in neutral and no unusual sounds. None of the gears will register that its in gear, so it won't move won't even budge, there is NO burnt smell on the transmission fluid and its still nice and red. So do yall think it sounds like the torque converter or something else? Any ideas?? Thanks
Has the mlp ever been replaced...? Does the engine change sound when u put it in gear?
Does the od light flash? If not does it illuminate if you cancel od?

Thanks for the reply! I just went out to check it and the mlp doesn't look like it has been replaced and the OD light does not flash and the OD light will light up when you cancel it or press the button.
The MLP CANNOT cause this. It is a mechanical failure inside the transmission. There is a slight chance it could be the torque converter, but I've never seen a torque converter fail to where there are no gears at all.

What would you think it would be. When I put it in R,N,OD,2,1 the idle does does not change at all in any of the gears.
With 5k miles you should still have warranty so take it back
The only warranty it had on it might of been a 100 day and that ended yesterday or today and I'm up in Ohio for college and the shop I had it done is in Virginia.. /: my luck haha

If the mlp is working correctly the idle will change like a half an octive whenn going from a rest gear to a moving gear.it is prob like mark said the main problem but not right either way.and you said you moved the selector and then it went.. just a best hope on my behalf to get you going...likely he's absolutely correct cause he's smarter than me!
I think something mechanical broke inside the transmission. If you want more definition than that bring me the trans and I'll tear it down and find out.
