help transmission problem

I have a 2001 expedition 4.6 4x4. Lately I have been had issues that I believe is transmission related but dont know how to properly diagnose the issue ie a tc, clutches, etc. While I am driving especialy up steep hills the rpm often start fluctuating about 300 rpm up and down. In adittion it sometimes will squeal until it down shifts (I am sure its not a belt squeal). Last the lower the rpm (overdrive) the worse it seems. The truck doesnt always do this but does off and on. I had replaced the fluid and added slip fix but doeent seem to help. I am going to do a filter change but after that dont know how to pin point the problem. Any ideas?

Could be the starter motor too. Since it's more of an issue when going up steep hills, the starter drive could be sliding down and engaging the flywheel. The high speed spin of the starter could be the squeal you're hearing. Just a thought.

Thats an angle never thought wbout but the two things that me think its not the starter is that it will stop squealing if I lay off the gas and ease off heavy load (slow down). The other reason is that I am not that lucky lol.

Mine too!
The shops start by using a scanner that can view many of the internal goings on within the tranny. That scanner is invaluable for the initial diagnosis. In fact I usually tell people to pay the diagnostic fee and have it checked out for this very reason.

Ok so say my trans is on its way out. Leaving out the computer/ check engine light is the trans tailshaft on a c5 etc the same length as what I have? I dont have 3000$ to blow so I am just doing some damage control options in my head if its worst case scenario.
