starter problem
i recently got an 87 ranger with a 2.9 that has an m5od in it which i know is not the correct year of tranny and the thing sounds like a tin can of rocks. it seems to me like the starter is not working properly sounds like it says on the fly wheel when its running. i don't know what year the tranny is so i don't know if i have the wrong starter but i don't think its pulling the gear back? the flywheel is perfect though. i haven't had the time to re pull the starter after it won't start anymore. just spins won't turn the flywheel. i just wanted to know if anyone had input.

Sounds like the internal starter bendix hardware has a problem, or may be sticking. Pull the starter, open it up & have a look. I once had to remove, open & clean my my 78 Merc Zypher starter to lube the shaft that the bendix slides on, to fix a sticking problem, where it didn't want to release enough & it would sometimes ting the flywheel after a start.
I Lightly lubed it with a film of a good quality high moly content grease & that puppy was still working fine when I finally let it go in 07!!!! Let us know what you find.
