Sometimes when I start my 1988 F150 302 AOD truck, the starter turns, but the engine doesn't engage. When this happens, I immediately turn the key off, and each time when I tried to start the truck a second time, it started normally. Otherwise, everything works fine.
I recall someone telling me once that there is some kind of mechanism that pushes a gear out on the starter to engage the engine--if that is right, could that be sticking, so that sometimes the starter is running without engaging the engine.
Thanks for any information/advice.
Frank.
it could be your starter solenoid that isn't engageing. If that doesn't enegae the starter will run and not crank the motor. Check that and see if that is the problem if that is the problem it shouldn't be that hard to fix. I hope this helps you out good luck
Actually, it's the bendix inside the starter. The solenoid just energizes it. If the starter spins but does not engage to the engine, replace the starter. Just replacing the bendix isn't worth the trouble with the price of rebuilt starters these days.
Let me add something, look under the truck at the starter. Make sure it is on tight and not just hanging by 1 bolt. If it come loose, it will cause the same symtom by not engaging the flywheel. Also, which I have not seen in along time, if the starter stayed engaged while driving, it will chew off the teeth on the starter or possibly the flywheel. Hope that didn't happen.
