Before I ran out of time last Friday, after not being successful in getting my truck running, I got a code 18 when I put a scanner on it. As I was out of time and the truck had to be moved from where it was, I had to have it towed to a shop. Reading posts about this code later tells me it's very likely a bad module-or ECU. Since I know the TFI modules on these things are known bad actors I ordered a Motorcraft replacement after reading all the comments, both here and on other Ford oriented BBDs that the aftermarket ones were lacking in quality and performance. With it in hand, and two others at the auto parts store I work at, I set about trying our BWD ignition module tester that we've hardly touched since receiving...VERY few people bring us ignition modules to test these days compared to 20 years ago. Besides the Motorcraft I tested a BWD and the in-house cheapy 'Master Pro' brand. You'd never believe it, but both the Master Pro AND BWD tested BAD OFF THE SHELF! I'd doubt the result of the test were it not for the Motorcraft module testing good. Normally BWD makes some pretty good stuff, so I really am surprised at that...What sort of alchemy does Ford having going on in these things?
I think there's a chance BWD has produced a bad batch of ignition modules for our trucks (EECIV). I tested another pt# CBE24 today, after sending the last one out as a warranty, and tested it. It tested bad as well. To confirm the tester was working ok, I grabbed one for the later Fords with the remote TFI module, pt# CBE40, and it tested just fine. While the connectors used to connect to the tester are different, the tester evaluates modules on several criteria, two of them being high RPM and low RPM performance, and the CBE24 modules are failing the high RPM phase of the test. Just FIY..
