p0221/trans limp mode

Hi guys,

Running into my first issue on my F350 since I've got it. The trans always shifted a little hard, but never slipped. I don't know if it's a trans or the new code causing it to go into limp mode. I've searched the code on our forum but didn't quite see what I'm experiencing.

Truck runs fine most of the time, then check engine light will come on and pedal becomes non-responsive. This is the code p0221 which means the pedal position sensor is non-responsive. Engine light comes on, and OD light flashes.

Once the pedal comes back to life, the check engine light will go off. The part that is worrying me is that my trans (auto) goes into limp mode with overdrive button flashing (*****) and will shift out of first gear quickly while slipping and almost lug the engine because it's in 2nd gear too soon. The flashing OD light will also turn off with the check engine light, but will continue to run like above with first gear slip, and off shift points.

Seems that when I turn it off and back on, the trans will shift normally until the pedal goes out again, then the process repeats.

Thoughts? Anybody dealt with this before? I'm hoping that my trans is not toast and the limp mode is connected to the pedal somehow.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will chime in. Sounds like your issue is in your pedal. Especialy when you say that it returns to normal if you shut it off and turn it back on.

If signal is lost from the pedal than the engine (or trans for that matter) has no idea where its positioned. So it defaults by going into liimp mode. And I'm fairly sure the only way out of it is to do as you do to turn it off and back on again.]

Like I said I'm sure someone with more knowledge will chime in.

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully that is the case. It helps to hear more a flow chart of events that are happening that would cause the limp mode. What you described makes a lot of sense.

Until you fix the pedal problem the trans is going to continue to do this.
