trans question

hello i am new here. i found your site from a yahoo serch. i recently bought a 93 f150 xlt. 4x2 supercab, 5.0, 4eod trans (i think). i am having problems with the trans. it wont upshift 1st-2nd and 2nd-drive until you get it to around 4500 rpm and it wont seem to shift to overdrive at all. when its cold if you start it up and take off without warming up, the trans will shift like its supose to even to overdrive and lock up on the convertor, but once you drive a few miles and it gets warm it quits shifting. if you stop and take off in 2nd it will move fine and then shift 1st to 2nd no problem but wont shift to drive unless you run it up to 4500 rpm. also if you slow down it will down shift prematurely. i have had the trans filter replaced (just filter and fluid NOT the whole trans flushed) it didnt seem to help. is the trans shot and need rebulit? is a sensor bad? the trans pulls fine and does not slip or shudder. i think a sensor is the problem but would like some others opinion before i spend 1200-1500 on a new trans. also when the truck is warm and you stop somewhere and shut it off for a few minutes it wont start until it sets for about 20 minutes. it cranks over with the starter fine and the fuel rail has fuel in it but it wont start. is this the TPS? could this cause the trans problem also? any help would be appreciated. jimbo.

Check codes first. Is the OD off light flashing? If so there's transmission codes stored in the computer. Even if not that's the first thing to check before spending money on parts you don't know are bad.

i am going to buy a code reader today and see what it tells me. thanks for the response. the OD light is not flashing and it works when you push the button on/off. the check engine light is coming on and staying on then going out. but i dont see a pattern like flashing 7 times then 3 times. it just comes on for a while then goes out.

It won't flash a code until you tell it to either with a scanner or by jumpering two wires on the self test connector. The light coming on simply tells you there's a code stored in the computer.
