I was looking to buy a Prius but with a price of $30,000...it can wait. Even a used prius with 100,000 miles costs around $20,000! I am in my early 20's, working full-time and going to college. I still have at least 6 years of college left, some of which I WILL be commuting at least 150 miles per day. My current daily driver gets 12 MPG, which is why I am looking to get a more efficient vehicle for commuting. I do like the idea of a wagon.
Prius= 50mpg for $30,000.
or
Escort= 30mpg for $3,000.
Right now, I am looking at a 1996 Ford Escort station wagon a guy is selling locally. It is the exact color I am looking for, has a great interior, has just 55,000 miles, is a one owner car, has new tires and has never been in an accident. It is 100% complete and original, un-molested and even has the original window stickers from the dealer. The A/C and everything else works like new.
Do you guys think that this car is worth the price? I know that ford escorts can be found on craigslist all the time for like $800, but this one seems to be almost like a new car except for the year. This is not a regular $800 beater.
Assuming it has all of the options (power windows etc.) it KBB's at 3,300 Retail. But I think 2,500 would be a lot more fair. 3,000 for a '96 escort just seems like far to much.
No power options other than the adjustable mirrors. The options it has includes automatic transmission, roof rack, rear defroster, cruise control, tilt steering, rear window wiper, electric adjustable mirrors, tachometer and 14" wheels instead of the standard 13".
Yeah, I have offered $2,500 but the guy is saying that the car is priced high because of having one owner and being taken care of. He wont come down on the price whatsoever.
About the $25,000 in gas, how do you mean? I was thinking that for a $25,000-$30,000 car I would have to keep it for 30 years before it pays for itself or something.
A part of me is haggling over the price because it is a little steeply priced for what it is and I'm not getting a deal on the price...but another part of me is saying it's nearly a new car for $3,000 and 30mpg.
My girlfriend does not understand why I want to pay $3,000 for a 1996 car, let alone a station wagon.
