I've been tracking down all sorts of issues in my 4x4 lately and I have a few quiestons. I have an issue where everything is spinning as I drive even in 2wd. I gutted my hubs and removed the driveshaft. I had new u joints put in the front shaft today and re installed it. I still have the same issue of everything spinning while driving in 2. I had my marks move with the shaft in or out. I assume its getting tward front axle joint time. The shop owner said there should not be any movement in 2 but every SD I've seen has the axles spinning driving around town. I'm just confused because I have the entire driver side axle move when I spin the shaft by hand. Sorry for the blob of text as I am on my phone!
The strange thing is that the hubs are hollow except for the outer piece (warn manual hubs). The main thing is when I spin the front shaft, the drivers side axle will spin wich confuses me. Please excuse my lack of 4x4 knowledge!
Its not real hard to check whats going on. Jack up one wheel spin it with the hub unlocked if the axle spins the hub is locked...Do the same for the other...If neither axle spins then the transfercase is locked in 4wd..Easy

One of the axles are supposed to spin if you turn the front shaft by hand (if you hold the other axle). The axles can spin if there is enough friction coming from stub axle (short outer axle) also. You can also turn the front drive shaft by turning one of the front axles by hand. There is no disconnect at the front differential but there is at the t-case and at the front hubs. If you stop the front drive shaft and spin one axle by hand the opposite axle will spin in the opposite direction. If 2 people hold the 2 front axles you won't be able to turn the front driveshaft until one of them lets go.................grasping it yet?

That makes sense, thanks! I figured since the hubs were hollow nothing world happen but there is no binding as if the case is engaged. So I guess all I normal!
Normal? Axles are not supposed to turn in 2wd at all ever while you are driving.
Ever? They do if the hubs are locked, or if there is enough friction coming from the hubs or hub. If everything is working well, hubs unlocked, and t-case not in 4wd, the axles should be static while driving.
