1947 ID number

For thse of you who keep up with this sort of thing, here's the number from my truck frame. It agrees with the metal placard on the glovebox door: 799T 1343907.....
This is also what is on the NY Registration now, though on the frame the "1" looks more to be an "I"...
The glove box tag calls it a Model U.

So is the truck in your driveway yet? or still figuring out the transporting of it?
I'm not up to speed on the vin number sequence of these trucks, Yet. but I do know they stamped the letter "I" for a 1 so nothing to worry about there.

Pictures?

Josh, its still in Dad's driveway, unfortunately. A contact through my employer I spoke with, said he posted it to a nationwide transport loading board, earlier this week....I did not get it running, so the field of potential haulers gets narrowed of those without winching capabilities....
I took tons of pics, but posting to here is cumbersome so it'll have to wait til I'm less busy, in general....
thanks for asking,
Bill D

47 Ford Pick Up

I bought a complete cab and chassis with a bill of sale 25 years ago. the man I bought it from said he put all the body parts on his 97 S10 Pick up.
I initially kept it only for parts for my Dad's 1941 Complete Ford Pick up.
I wanted to do a check here in California with the DMV to see if the man's S 10 is still on record in California. After using numerous coatings of paint remover I finally found a number stamped on the frame on the drivers side a little behind the water pump/motor mount.
It is: 744Y204576I
I went to my local registration service facility and they could not find a record of it.
If anyone reading this knows if this is the correct vin number let me know.
I was hoping to find the original owner and see if he still had the truck sitting around someplace in hopes of buying it from him to get the body back.
Seeing that this may not be on record in California, I will have to make an appointment with the Cal CHP and have them verify the vin and do a more extensive search.
If they do not find any record of it in the old Archives, they will issue a NEW Vin Plate and I can register it.
The man I got it from told me the motor and transmission had been receltly rebuilt, (that was twenty five years ago).
I had some electrical work done on it a couple years ago and had the Generator Rebuilt and re-wound for 12V and put a new regulator on it and the wiring to make it start from the push button on the dash.
I only ran it for about 30 seconds and it ran perfect.
I am looking for a Radiator and the core supprt frame if anyone can share a link where to get them.
Also, does anyone know where the original Gas Tank is supposed to be located? There is a tank on the floor under where the seat goes. It is not hooked up to the truck, so I do not know if it is the orig or not? I will check back in with some photos soon. Thanks, Joe

The gas tank is mounted under the seat. Lots put it somewhere else for safety.

1947 Ford commercial truck VIN

I recently purchased just the front end of a larger size Ford truck- saw a similar one with large front tires, dually in rear, large flat bed-at same yard. I have no frame, no engine. Didn't see any VIN on the glove box-at least no indication that one had been removed. Any suggestions on where the VIN might be located? thanks, Harland in CO

The VIN is on the frame. If you didn't buy something with a frame, then you don't have a VIN.

no frame

That does pose a dilemma. thought I read something about the glove box having a VIN on a plate. Maybe that was on the smaller bodies. With a number of old cabs being mounted on more contemporary frames, it must pose a challenge to restorations- like, how do you recreate the VIN from the frame? maybe it could be cut out and then weld the metal plate portion onto the new frame. thanks for replying. Harland, originally these trucks had a plate mounted on a rating plate that was attached to the inside of the glove box door with the 2 screws that hold on the door handle. The body itself is not stamped anywhere. The other numbers would be the frame and the transmission bell housing. If you only have a body, no frame, and no rating plate on the door, you're out of luck, you have no vin for the truck. As for mounting the body on a newer frame, most states will allow you to, with an account of where the parts came from, and then you might be issued a new vin, one for a kit or reconstructed vehicle, again, depending on your state registration rules. Swapping around vin and all is frowned upon big time in the collector car world, it's a very shady practice that many buyers will run from.

rating plate

will check for the plate-rather suspect they had a short longevity back then. What a difference from today with everything under the sun stamped with a VIN. thanks for advising. Harland
