Can someone explain this?

Some guy on craigslist is selling a title and VIN tag (but no truck!) for a thousand dollars:

1956 Ford F-100 Title-Owners Manual & V. I. N. Tag-Best Offer

Might better watch out, it could be a sting operation. The sale of titles and vin plates are illegal.

I doubt it's a sting, he could be selling it as a historical document. I just think he was told by someone that titles were worth a fortune, or he mistyped an extra 0 or he's in a room full of open paint thinner cans or he's a moron. Yeah, I'm sure it's one of those.

After going through all the posts we have here asking "where is my VIN," and then directing folks to where those numbers should be only to find them removed or ground off, it makes a certain amount of sense that someone would be selling documentation that could be used to title and register a truck where that has happened. False proof if you will.

If you had a truck with no tags, or the serial number was ground off the frame, I would venture to say that almost NONE of the current DMV checkers would know it was supposed to be there, and you could get away with walking in, dropping this document down on the desk, ("creating a new serial number" for a truck literelly without one, from a dismantled truck), for the purpose of getting title, plates and registration for yours. Serial number check..."Ok come out and look at my 'VIN tag'" (which is actually just a Rating Plate.

That IS Illegal, and it's quite a gamble that who ever dismantled the truck, or the scrap yard that ate it, didn't report the serial number to the DMV at destruction. I think they call it FRAUD.

Then again, it is pretty neat when you have enough money laying around to pay $1000 for one of these things to frame up and hang over the mantle. That is obviously what this person must be thinking.

Fact is it's just not really that hard to title and register a truck without a title. DMVs are really getting better about working with people. You DO need a Serial Number. But why spend $1000 when you can buy a pair of Glove Box Door Rating Plates all embossed with the serial number of your choice for $60. DMV would probably accept that. They wil do just about anything to get your money! Or spend $100 on a set of stamps and put you own serial number back on the frame - to go with that $60 Rating Plate

J!

if you have the title, registration the vin # should be on it. take it to your highway patrol or whatever they call them and they should be able to issue you a #. i've even had it done with a bill of sale. just takes more time
