Then why, more often then not, do they fail before a mechanical engine?
How do they fail before a mechanical engine?
I would love to see an engine from the 70's go for 250,000 miles with nothing but basic maintenance (spark plugs, wires, cap/rotor, fluid and filter changes), and no oil consumption. Don't even think about pulling the valve covers either....
With that said, I am replacing the FI 460 in my '88 with a carb'ed 466 (C9 block, D0VE heads)

See it all the time grandpas 79 150 did it with a 400
great grandpas 75 did it with a 351
other grandpa did it with a 77 250 with a 300
That being said my first grandpa started hualing iron and bought a 95 f150 and put over 600,000 on it only took the motor out to replace clutches in the mazda trans
we had 90 or 91 f150 with a I6 5 speed and it had 300,000 miles on the original motor, tranny, and clutch/slave cylinder! we got rid of it cause the A arm was about rusted in half
yayyy another allis guy, my 1950 starts pretyy easy but is pretty finicky to get started. Doesnt help that cylinder two burns oil. I dont know bout that john deere two popper though
Hahaha... yeah I miss that Johnny popper. Good tractor, many good memories with it. 48 Model A, serial no. 610224, if you ever see her then let me know cause I WANT TO BUY IT BACK! The WD is still around, the only time it's finicky is when the carb float sticks. I don't think it likes this new crap gas that's being sold everywhere, poor tractor. First they took the lead out, now they put moonshine in it.
I've replaced the damn thing twice (float valve and seat), but sometimes after shutting down she won't restart. Come to think of it, the JD did that too, just not as bad. Grrrrr... I hate ethanol blend fuel. Bad mileage, eats older fuel systems for lunch... yeah, REAL good idea there...

So you know all the maintenance done to them too? I find it hard to believe that the 351 and 400 lasted that long on the original oil pump. They are bad about dying early
With that said, you won't find any '70's Ford around here on the original untouched motor after 150k miles. I've seen dozens. My buddy bleeds '70's Fords, and has owned nearly 100 over the years...he'll agree.
Either way...new motors will and do last longer...it's all the EPA emissions ***** that dies first...
